I recently saw this keyboard (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7808606&type=product&productCategoryId=cat01060&id=1142293958069) for sale at Best Buy. My keyboard is a little dated, and I thought it would be a nice upgrade.

The first thing I noticed was that when I hooked it up to my fully updated XP pro system it would not recognize it, and a majority of the letter keys would not function. I ran the install, and it proceeded to load a 40 meg program. That program was always running in the background. Fine. I don’t like that, but whatever.

I hop into WOW and spend some time re-mapping keys to use the new control surface. It was a little frustrating because some of the buttons had a little letter on them showing what letter that key was actually pressing, i.e. the jump button said Jump, then below that said (Space), the forward button has an up arrow and below it (W). Apparently the designers that made those keys were thoughtful, but the ones that worked on some of the other keys were not so helpful. The other designers did not feel the need to include that little clue as to what it was I what button I was pressing.

The piece of software that installed, as best as I could tell, was 99.95% useless. The only USEFUL thing it managed to do was install the driver. When opened it gave you a list of common games and when clicked on it would show what each button was for. Apparently the designers were not so sure that I have ever played a game before. They felt the need to determine the best key settings for me without asking. One example is in WOW. I spend 95% of my time on my 60 grinding for mats or cash, or in a raid. I don’t have a use for the Quest button all that often. A key I FREQUENTLY use brings up the raid screen. Under each game on in their software was a selection that said “default”. This gave me the impression that I could create different layouts and use the software to switch between them. i.e. I could switch to raiding and have all my macro’s for different things hot keyed, to then switch to alt grinding mode and replace the raid screen button with the quest log button. There was no such functionality. That was a lie. It did not matter if I was in Windows with the Windows default selected, or in WOW with the window selected, everything worked the same.

There is also a glitch that caused the keyboard to randomly stick and one letter would go nuts. Once this happened with forward and I almost ran into monster encampment. Another time it happened and I attacked a guard that I had targeted, so I got a Dishonor Kill, then the last few times it happened in windows. Every time the only way to clear the error was to go into the useless software and click on a different “default” and activate it. I thought that it was because I went into WOW, without changing the WOW default to active, but then noticed that it happened more often when I had actually taken the time to activate the default for the game I was in.

On a separate note, they took the arrow keys and the block above it containing delete insert etc and smushed them into the number keypad. I understand that they did this for space reasons, I mean who wants a 4 foot wide keyboard, but in the mean time it made that entire block useless. The delete key never worked.

I returned the keyoard and exchanged it, thinking that I may have had a bad one. I deleted the driver and re-installed. The EXACT same problems happened, and the delete key still does not work.

I’m going to give it a 1 / 10. The one point is for a good concept, the -9 points is for doing a horrible job executing it.

I'm left handed so I like having the controls of the left side but I prefer the 10-key (numpad), so I bought this (http://www.ymouse.com/xkeys/xkdesk.php). It sits on the left side of my keyboard and I just map the keys I want to it. It took me a bit to get used to the interface (on the software side), there isn't a lot of documentation for it's use. It lets you program as many different sets of macros (and save them to your HDD) as you like and you can have up to two loaded as once...there is a green/red switch on it that toggles in between. The biggest (and really only) trouble I had was that I didn't that I had to program both the "key press" and "key unpress" events to map say the 'w' key.

I've got one myself. The panel on the left is pretty useless, it's horribly designed and utterly useless. I still use the WASD setup on the normal part of the keyboard. The numpad hardly works and is set up horribly, there isn't even a print screen button. Theres a lot of keys missing which are vital in some games, and theres no replacement on the Z panel. Useless, this keyboard isn't worth the money.

I was considering this keypad, Fang Keypad (http://www.ideazon.com/us/products/fanggamepad.asp) which is made by the same company. Now I am not so sure after reading about their keyboard. Has anyone tried this out yet?

The Fang is generally the same design as the gaming pad on the MERC.

For whatever the reason my WoW Zboard set wouldn't work so I bought the BC version which is basically the same on the left middle reg keyboard stuff while the keypad was redone to add the raid/pvp functions. How well they use it I don't know but concidering how little the keypad and my delete and the entire thing still works I like it. Nice clean face. Nice layout. Its not bad if you allready got a Z board.

i have a fang and a merc. (different computers)

i like them both

the merc my wife uses- she is not a gamer and finds the leftside keysetup great to use - because she was not USED to using the main keyboard for playing wow.

i have the fang for my computer and never use it. WHY?

because i have played mmo's for years and have the the interface down COLD on the keyboard. i am a lefty and use the mouse with my LEFT hand.

right hand ONLY controls directionals(arrow keys in my case) my left hand controls all the hotkeys(yes i take my hand off the mouse)

faster than the game allows i can use hotkeys from 3 different hotkey bars due to how it have it setup, just using my left hand

all my MAIN used keys are set on buttons 1-5 on 3 different hotkey bars

1-5 is main bar (naturally)
alt+ 1-5 is upper left bar
ctrl +1-5 is upper right bar

and i can use any of them at anytime, going from bar to bar just with the left hand, faster than the ui allows me to actually DO it.

For a good gaming keyboard I'd get the Logitech G15. Its simple, and has a lot of functionality to it. The only downside is that it tends to glitch up, but it most of that was fixed with a patch, and all of the glitching was pretty much isolated to the LCD screen, which doesn't affect the keystroke functions at all so its still 100% functional. Defiantly worth the buy.

The Logitech G15 is awesome.

I have had horrible experiences with ZBoards myself as well. Like, buying one, having it work for a few months and then randomly stop. I exchanged emails for a few days to now avail, so they sent me another one. That one didn't work either so I stopped at that point. I tried both the keyboards on more than one computer (two desktops and a laptop, possibly more).
I'd warn anyone about to buy a ZBoard or related product.

I used a Zboard before I got my G15 I end up replacing the Zboard, because it wasnt as "water profe" like it claims to be.

I didnt really feel a need for the Zboard it just seemed like a waste of time, wasnt that useful. I can see if someone doesnt like using wasd keys to move around. but I have been playing games for a long time so its not a deal for me. I would like to point out how much better the G15 is compaired to the Zboard though. the ability to make macros in the middle of things is great.

For WoW G15 makes playing as a healer so easy. you can bind your heals with macros everything to the macro buttons. From playing a druid it made it really nice.

Thats just my 2 cents though.
