Back when i was banned... for the second time i beleive, i started playing WOTS again, a game with only one real thing always present and that is swords and samurai, ok make that two things, though not in a bad way, not at all. The graphics in the game are crisp and not very blocky, while there are only a few enemies present, in the situation you see them it makes complete sense, with multiple paths to take, each based on what side(s) you join, the game has lots of replay value. Sword fighting is limited to about 5 sets of attacks unless im mistaken, each corresponding with one style of weapon, up, side, down, middle and ninja. There are no voices, but instead some Japanese yells, while it seems strange this somehow fits into the game. i lament that they didn't have full Japanese voices though. Weapon sounds are...just that, music is fairly good. and now lets take a good in depth look

Sound: as stated before, there aren't voices, only Japanese yells, the music changes between the three times of day, battle and final battle music, the opening which i will group into the category has some of the best music i have heard, i just need to find an MP3 of it haha...yet this is coming from the guy who likes Dynamo's theme from megaman x5 because it was catchy, battle sounds are fitting, and this game is fairly good for being one of the earlier games made for the ps2 (blue disk game)

8/10 - get japanese voices next time

Graphics: since the map is loaded in peices depending where you move it starts of fairly good, and usually the very small textures ive seen are pretty good, i have seen better but considering just how amazing the river bridge looks during the afternoon it can be forgiven. Enemies are of two types, one side and another side. there are what i will call "generals" which are storyline characters and have special skins, other than that its just the two sides, and maybe a stray ronin.

8/10 - pretty good for a blue disk.

Gameplay: truthfully the camera could have used some work, tightening inside of a building makes it a bit tougher to fight, but since blocking auto faces you toward your enemy, and you dont get ganged up on its not too troublesome. Basic battle mechanics are easy, attack "weak" with square, attack strong with triangle, block with R1, but the advanced mechanics are harder to master. these being pulling, pushing and awase. Pulling and Pushing are my way of classifying the parry and push mechanic, which is a sort of unbalancer you can use on enemies when they attack you, allowing you to take a free shot or two if youre careful enough. beware, enemies can do the same to you! you can push or pull when you do a weak attack on an enemies block, or when you block one of their weak attacks. master it quickly. Much more difficult to master is awase, which is a split second cancel of an enemies attack. quickly tapping block before an enemies attack contacts you yeilds a yellow flash and the enemy pausing, this is extremely hard to time, but worthwhile to master, you can awase at just about any time, and sometimes this gives you an ability that permanently cancels that attack! learning attacks is done through different methods, using one attack lots of times, crawling backwards for about 10 seconds, the list is pretty long. You can also build up your weaponry using a sort of see-saw mechanic of going to the blacksmith, see swords vary in durability, sharpness, defensive ability and for some strange reason, the amount of health you have. The blacksmith can alter these statistics to suit your liking and to build an ultimate sword! Though you only have two days to do everything, saving is a bit of a pain too since its a one save system. you save, game turns off. you load, save state is deleted.

7/10 - simple to pick up and play, difficult to master, the save system is an unforgiving mistress and the game could be longer

Replayability: 5 different endings, lots of swords, different titles to earn, three difficulties and building up swords? damn dont even ask

9/10 - i only wish each weapon had a specific style to it.

Total score = 32/40, an 8/10!
considering how cheap the game is if you do find it, its worth every penny, if you're into the sort of samurai life games, this is something you should try at least once.

coming soon: WOTS 2 follow-up
