I figured i'd start a place for guitar players to talk about guitar stuff.

I have an Epiphone SG Special and a Vox 15 valvetronix amp.
I also have an Epiphone AJ-1 Acoustic guitar.

I lean more towards older music, but occaisionally a more recent song strikes me and i'll learn it. My biggest inspirations have been AC/DC's Angus Young and most metal bands from the 80's.

I get most of my music from ultimate-guitar.com.

I'm not in a band currently, so i've just been jamming on my own a little bit.

So what do you play with, what sort of music do you play, and whats your current music standing?

I played with two guitars. One acoustic, one electric. Both guitars were cheap (I say were, becuase they've snuffed it now - need new ones) so the quality wasn't fantastic.
The electric was a Rocket Deluxe. However I have a Marshall G15R CD amp. Its tiny, but the volume it can crank up to is nothing short of amazing.

The stuff I play is fairly typical Riffs simular to Metallica. After all, I did learn to play guitar from Metallica's songs. Yup, It was very difficult to learn but I got it in the end after I learned to read tabs. I'd get home from College and spend literally four or five hours just strumming away.

I listen to Rock/Metal mostly and a bit of Classical type music on the side. Yaknow, orchestral and chior stuff.

I was in a band with two fantastic song writers. However, they couldn't play the riffs I was coming out with. Far too fast and Metallica'ish lol. So had to calm it down and play a style of music I wasn't used to at all. No ones fault in particular. We just learned to play two different styles. So needless to say, that band didn't get anywhere.
Although we did get one Gig in Scotland... But we got a bit too drunk beforehand!

That thing about style, i definetly could relate to.

I was offered to play lead guitar for a punk band, but punk isn't really my style or my cup of tea. Since i'm more of a rock n' roll metal, chuck berry, kind of player i figured i'd wait for a chance to play something that i wanted possibly with some friends.

But i just got an offer from a group of friends that will be playing some stuff that i could get in to. Just a matter of working things out. Plus i've got a teacher who likes to play guitar and we've been working on "Dream On" by Aerosmith and "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynrd. So it's just holding out for people who are interested in what i do which is nice.

Marshalls are sweet amps, i've got a mini-stack thats about the size of my foot for portable playing. Not very good sound quality but nice for traveling.

You might try tabs. They're easy to read and in no time you'll be a rockin' machine. I am completely self taught, but took 3rd place at the school talent show. Thats right, the guitar is starting to pay for itself.
I'd like to learn notes and i have like 3 different books to do it with so i could do it if i applied the time, but right now im satisfied with the tabs. Once you learn a few chords and such you can start fiddling and come up with some stuff on your own. One of my english teachers showed me blue boxes (at least i think thats what its called) and with that pattern ive been able to work on my own chord changes and even some solo work.
James Hettfield (Metallica) said in a Classic Albums episode that he couldn't (or can't?) read guitar notes. So lessons arent necessarily...necessary. They help, but you could manage with enough dedication i think.

edit: cheap models are good starters i think. And my SG isn't very expensive, but its a good quality. Just stick with it, buddy.

I play bass in my band, use a Dean bass. Have no clue what model as I got it a long time ago from a used guitar store and can't seem to find any guitar that matches it online or in stores. It has great sound though so I have stuck with it. I play through an Ampeg SVT classic head with a 6x10 cab.

I play guitar a little mostly just coming up with simple riffs for the guitar players in the band to expand on. I use a Gibson SG Standard for that. I can put some pics of the stuff up later when I'm at home. Unfortunately I don't have them here at work.

I lied I had some pics on my myspace I was able to snag.

First one you can see the rig. Second is a clear shot of the Dean bass. And the 3rd is obviously the sg with the Dean partially visible in the background.
