When it comes right down to it, Last of the Breed is a survival story. It revolves around Major Joseph "Joe Mack" Makatozi of the United States Airforce. His heritage is that of a Sioux Indian, which is very important to the story. But during a test flight of a new jet during the Cold War, his plane is forced down (it never says how) and he is captured and taken to Colonel Zamatev's camp in Siberia, but then he escapes.
He is pursued by troops as well as a Siberian counterpart to the American Indian, a Yakut named Alekhin. But Joe Mack's only way to get back to America lies across the Bering Strait, the way his ancient ancestors had come to America.
So the biggest problem is he's in Siberia, being pursued, and not even sure how he is going to cross the strait.

Louis L'amour has come to be one of my favorite authors. His style reminds me so much of my own. When i think "why do i bother writing, its probably not good enough." i read Louis L'amour and discovered that he has a very similar writing style to my serious work.
The way he tells the story, you feel as if you are staring down into the canyons of a Siberian river. Or climbing a mountain ducking under trees avoiding Soviet aircraft.
It definetly has parts that make you wonder how that is possible. Joe Mack somehow acquires a pack and matches seemingly out of nowhere. But when that is overlooked it makes for a great novel.

There are several plots that start to come together as the story progresses. Characters that seem to have no importance and make you wonder, "what does this have to do with anything?" eventually have a purpose and all have some sort of resolution.

And as for the final resolution: AWESOME. It has one of the best endings to any book i have ever read. I can't get over how much i love the ending to this book. It is so hard to describe and i don't want to put any spoilers, but i love this ending.
This has just been added to my Top 10 Favorite Books. Amazing.

Louis L'amour fans: must read.
