For Christmas this year, my boyfriend got me the first in this series, a book called Dragon Weather (http://www.watt-evans.com/dragonweather.html) by Lawrence Watt-Evans. It sucked me in.

His style is simple and yet, he pays attention to all the kinds of details I would, too. The story centers around one man, whose village is destroyed by dragons and then looters sell him into slavery. It's about his search for 'justice' but so much more. I don't want to give anything away, I know if I start talking about it too much, I just might.

I love the way he writes, I love the characters and I love the story. So far :) We had a hell of a time finding the 2nd two books after the first, though, so he may not be commonly available in some places but check it out if you get the chance. I'm about 3/4 through the second book, Dragon Society. The only problem that the b/f found wasn't really a problem, he just pointed out that from the pictures and the title, he thought there'd be more of the dragons in the story itself... but they're more like an over-hanging threat, something in the background that you can't quite ignore. It's hard to explain. But the books sucked him in, too.

I highly recommend them to any fans of fantasy stories.

Yea, they are decent books. I highly recommend any of Watt-Evans books, particularly those set in his home-brew fantasy world Esthar of the Spices and the Lords of Dus series. Most are probably out of print, but Amazon has them all.

Aye, as soon as I'm done with the Obsidian books (just finished the 2nd one last night and Whoa...) I intend to look for the others. I know our local booksellers don't have 'em, I've already done some preliminary searching... so Amazon, here I come!

Holy jeez, man... I just got & finished the first one of the Ethshar books, The Misenchanted Sword. I loved it, simply L.O.V.E.D it. I have the next one, too, and will get to reading once I get home (finished this first one while on my lunch break at work today)

Why is it that the books & series I love so much are all out of print? This isn't the first... it's the third or fourth, that I can think of off the top of my head. Why is there such bullcrap that stays around forever and the wonderful stories get lost? Or is my opinion on these things really so outrageously different from the majority of the world? *sigh*

Anyway, you were right about Ethshar :)

The cool thing about Esthar is the fact that you don't have to read any of them in a particular order. They are all standalone books just happening in the same world/setting. Occasionally there will be a reference to a character or an event from one of the other books, but it is just mentioned in passing and is there for flavor.

I'll give the obsidians a try.. after a long stint of having trouble reading books due to sleeping trouble, i'm finally back at reading 1 book pr 2 days again... so i need new stuff pretty often.
