For Christmas this year, my boyfriend got me the first in this series, a book called Dragon Weather (http://www.watt-evans.com/dragonweather.html) by Lawrence Watt-Evans. It sucked me in.
His style is simple and yet, he pays attention to all the kinds of details I would, too. The story centers around one man, whose village is destroyed by dragons and then looters sell him into slavery. It's about his search for 'justice' but so much more. I don't want to give anything away, I know if I start talking about it too much, I just might.
I love the way he writes, I love the characters and I love the story. So far :) We had a hell of a time finding the 2nd two books after the first, though, so he may not be commonly available in some places but check it out if you get the chance. I'm about 3/4 through the second book, Dragon Society. The only problem that the b/f found wasn't really a problem, he just pointed out that from the pictures and the title, he thought there'd be more of the dragons in the story itself... but they're more like an over-hanging threat, something in the background that you can't quite ignore. It's hard to explain. But the books sucked him in, too.
I highly recommend them to any fans of fantasy stories.
