So, I'm kinda young to be what a fan would call "A True Listener" but I've been a Skinny Puppy fan ever since I heard Testure about 7 years ago. I got "The Greater Wrong of the Right" when it came out a few years ago, and wasn't impressed. Besides Pro-Test and Goneja, 90% the songs were terrible; they had no beat, lyrics that were just a BIT too irritating to listen to, and a leftist ideology that was just too extreme for my more moderate view on the world. I can understand SP's need to push buttons and protest (pun not intended) but it was too much for me to take, except in really small doses.
So, I was browsing through Borders the other day, and Lo and Behold!-There sat Mythmaker, SP's new album. I had some spare cash, so I figured what the heck. I bought it.
I am now enthralled. SP has FINALLY taken what was great about their old industrial style and made it contemporary. Better, it's actually good enough to listen to with people who might not be total fans of the genre. It's not poppy, IMHO, but it sure is new. Old, old SP fans might not like it, but I really do.
The songs are pretty good, but the ones that stand out are "Politikil", "Ugli" and "Pedafly". They have a bone-shattering beat to them, and some of the new songs are so utterly mechanic sounding that it's like being inside a power-plant. Their choruses are so great that you will almost want to sing along with them.
I also recommend that you get the Optimissed Remix by the Humble Brothers off iTunes, it's really rather sweet too.
Final point, Ogre, cEvin and Mark Walk have hit this one out of the PARK. It's Industrial that is new, and much better than the horrid synth-pop that other bands have fallen to.
9/10!
