Alright there was once a thread that walked me through what option I had to turn off and I can't remember for the life of me. These are the random pop-ups that happen when I am not surfing the Net. When I am just sitting here using word or playing EQ thesse pop up. Now that isn't to huge a problem but it bugs me. If I am playing a game if just messes it all up. Does anyone know what I am refering to and know how to fix it? thanks in advance

most recomend these 2 programs to be used together to get spyware.

Ad-Aware
http://lavasoft.element5.com/software/adaware/

SpyBot Search&Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org

I also use the google toolbar to block popups from websites myself.

Should have added, Ad-Aware does not remove it. The last thread there was something I had to disable. In either IE explorer or it was in my Control panel. I hate these things lol whatever it was last time worked though

If I remember correctly you're referring to the Windows Messaging Service popups that spammers are notoriously using to bug people now.

I only know how to do it in Windows 2000, here it is:

- start>programs>administrative tools>services
- A new window will pop up with a list of items on the right.
- Scroll down until you find "Messenger".
- Right click on it and select properties.
- Locate the "startup type" drop down box and set it to "Manual".
- Then below that click on the button that says "Stop".

What that will do is disable windows messenger, and prevent it from automatically starting up in the future.

*Note: Windows messenger is a built in service to windows and is not the same as MSN Messenger.

If it's windows messenger, there are only a few options to stop it.

A) Bitch at MS for having an OS that lets that happen
B) Bitch at your senator for not having spammers publicly hanged
C) Get a hardware Firewall

C Is the only one guarenteed to get the desired results within an acceptible time frame.

Umm actually, for windows messenger, the solution I presented above works. Secondly, you don't need a hardware firewall to stop windows messenger popups. Software solutions such as ZoneAlarm work effectively.

Another thing that makes this a little confusing is determining what kind of popups you're getting. If it's windows messenger, it's a windows popup, similar to an error message. If it's an internet popup, it's going to be in a browser window.

From the sounds of Ciarin's I'd be willing to take a wild stab in the dark and say that it's a browser pop up.

However, option B is the solution that sounds most enticing to me. :)

Newgrounds rapes my system and installs Gator and all kinds of crap. So I'd stop going to Newgrounds.

This (http://www.panicware.com/) worked for me at stopping browser pop-ups. I got it for 10 bucks at Wal-mart. Theres a free version but I don't know how well it works.

Gator is eeviiilll...

I still haven't figured out how to uninstall it. I managed to make it not appear on boot-up (saving a lot of trouble every time I reboot), but every now and then it still opens it's own browser window.

I meant adaware and spybot don't stop the pop-ups.

not the windows messenger......

If you're running on AWOL pop-ups are just about automatic and garaunteed at log-in. May have somethin' to do with that.

Ad-aware (http://www.ad-aware.com) will uninstall Gator for you, Saethori.

I don't know what'd be causing your po-ups, Ciarin, but every couple of days my home page is switched to some ad place that gives me a hojillion po-ups.. annoying.

Want to get rid of pop-ups? Switch to Mozilla Firebird (http://www.mozilla.org/download.html) for all your browsing needs. Runs like a dream in Windows, skinnable (with all sorts of fun themes) and doesn't crash Windows ME computer the way that IE daily did!

Here's some super directions on how to switch from IE to Firebird (http://jamie.typepad.com/ontheverge/2003/08/from_internet_e.html) if you're a bit nervous about the proposition. Nowadays I only fire up IE for those few, annoying, 'this site only works in IE' destinations.

I concur. I use Firebird for browsing and Thunderbird for email. Both products, IMHO, are far superior to IE and OE.

However, Mozilla, like netscape, handles javascript and some html tags differently than IE. Because of that, some sites do have odd little qwerks.

These boards for example. The ICQ icon that some people have, appears on the next line or sometimes randomly, on top of their post. Little things like that, but it's not a huge problem.
