Hi All,
Not sure if I am posting this in the right place or not but I am looking to get a new game system for the kid (I only do PC games). Currently he has a PS2 in one room far far away from my PC for his own saftey :P (jking)
Put I am looking to upgrade to either the PS3 or Xbox 360. I just am not sure which way to go.
Looking at Blue-ray players it would seem silly to spend the money on one and not just go for the PS3. But is the PS3 worth it? Anyone have one that could comment? I see more and more people using the 360.
Anyway, Thanks in advance for the feedback.

I have all three systems and think I could give a fair opinion, but need a bit more info first:
1) What kind of games does he play?
The 360 is FPS heavy with some American style RPGS like Mass Effect, JRPG and odd-ball Japanese game fans will probably be better served with a PS3.
2) What age range?
The PS3 has a wide variety of games, while the 360 is definitely slanted for late teen or older. If your boy is younger, the Wii may be the best way to go.
3) Do you care about the media functions Blu-Ray or PC streaming?
360 has direct media center integration, both systems can stream video and music from shares. The Blu-Ray is a definite advantage on the PS3 for movie lovers, and it is still one of the best Blu-Ray players available at any price.
If you like movies and have a good HD screen, the PS3 is very nice. Honestly for gaming it depends mostly on the kind of games he'll be playing.

Thanks for responding.
He is 12 and into all sort of games but mainly car racing and football on the PS2 so far with GH2 thrown in on occasion. He plays COD4 on other games like that on the PC.
As far as the movies go, that would be me. I love moves and building the DVD collection slow and steady. (Have over 400 VHS from over the years) So the Blu-Ray is something that interests me. I do have a 42 in LCD 1080P TV with an Onkyo sound system. Decent setup)
So that is why I pause at which way to go...

Sounds like the PS3 might be the best choice for you then. The sports games (IMO) are pretty much identical on both systems. GH is available for both as well and since he's smart enough to play FPS on the computer where they belong, the Blu-Ray would probably be the deciding factor.
That said, rumors of a Blu-Ray 360 by fall are seeming more and more true, but thats probably at least 5-6 months away http://www.dailytech.com/Report+Xbox+360+With+Bluray+Disc+Underway+from+Asu s+Subsidiary/article11674.htm
Lemme know if you have any more questions
Oh, one more consideration. If he'll be playing online he'll be best served with whatever system his friends will be playing too. That isn't really a consideration for me since I do any online play on the computer, but it is a consideration for a lot of people.

I dunno, I'm sort of interested in the prospect of upgrading, I have both and Xbox and a ps2, but am going to sell and donate a majority of my ps2 games because I simply don't have the time/interest to play them, or have beaten them well beyond the bounds of their enjoyment (you can only throw someone across a room in one game so many times before it loses its entertainment value after all) I'm going to keep my ps1 games and a handful of JRPG games probably though, I don't see myself wanting to hunt down some of the games again... and I'll probably get a bad return on them either way, donated or sold.
As for Sports and Driving, both systems are sort of starting out on those, you can depend on the 360 for both, and the PS3 is slowly trying to integrate their motion sensor into the whole idea (quite badly I think, but I guess they've got to try something) Shooters are more 360 based, in fact they make up a majority of the gaming library as the controller is particularly well suited for them, your thumbs aren't jamming against one another. But even the 360 is getting an expanded RPG library, so if Fable 2, Oblivion or the other RPG games catch your son's interest (And you think he is ready to chop people) He'll have a pretty good amount of choices already. The ps2 already is chock full of RPG games, and those mostly don't depend on graphics as much as story (Final Fantasy being the main exception, geez.... I want to cry, it looks nice, but it makes no sense! Style over substance doesn't work in this genre!) So maybe keeping the PS2 for those sorts of games isn't a terrible idea.
As for the entertainment portion of the consoles, I have nothing really to say, I use my laptop to enjoy DVDs in private more than in groups, DVR sort of negates my need for an entertainment system, The idea that you're getting a really cheap Blue-Ray player may appeal to you if you can overlook the fact that the pricetag for the ps3 is already fairly hefty, even as a console/entertainment system.
The Wii is sort of in its own category, its cheap, its entertaining, its a definite group favorite because there are many games for multiple players (And just as many for single player) You can only really get the same entertainment for groups on the 360 and PS3 with Rockband or Guitar Hero, or perhaps the singing games (do they still make those?) And on top of that you might enjoy it since it has many, many nostalgic callbacks.

360 has better games now. PS3 will have better games in the future(maybe).

Thanks to all for the replies...
I am still debating on what I want to do. The Blu-Ray on the PS3 is the upside of it. If I went ot by a Blue-Ray player it would run about $400 anyway.
I think I just need to head to a store with him to check out all the different games and see where the interests lay.
As far as the PS2, I will be keeping that and it will still be hooked up in the "Fun Zone" (that is the room that my son took over).

I guess the only thing extra you want to take into account is how you'll enjoy playing games, the motion sensor is the upside for the ps3, and the downside is the controller feels flimsy. The 360 has wireless rumble, but no motion sensor (at least not yet, attachments are probably going to be added?)
Online... do you mind paying a fairly cheap fee to use a system that has been working for a console already and got transfered over, or do you want to take a shot with the PS3 online system which is so far free but...well I haven't tested it
I think I'm going to go for the 360, mainly because aside from the few PS2 games I'm keeping, I feel that the lower cost and entertainment capabilities (And controller actually) suit me fine, I multi-console anyhow, but sony has been dissapointing me recently...the PS1 game downloads or ports in particular, you can't buy ps1 games anymore, unless you like slumming around ISOs, Pawn shops or EBay...and a global store would be even better, because PSP games are region free, I want a copy of Breath of Fire 3 dammit!
I don't suppose anyone knows of any online videogame stores that import from europe and japan, while not being in the line of fire by Sony? I briefly read what happened to the site that sold PSPs to other reigons, but I honestly can't get excited for any American released PSP games, they all...well...lack. Maybe I lean more towards the older school games on handhelds, I love Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth, Darkstalker Chronicles and am really looking forward to picking up the different Genesis era game collections, but most of the games being made require you to sit your butt down and play for a long amount of time to get anything done in them. Disgaea and FFT being the only real exceptions as far as I can tell because stages in those games can be really fast, and well...turn based.

one thing you have to ask yourself concerning Blu-ray us if you want to spend $30 per movie atm. I have a PS3 and a Blu-ray drive in my computer and I mainly use my PS3 for PS2 games and movies.
I'm an RPG fan and will be happy when some start coming out for the PS3.

I don't want to come across as a ass.
The PlayStation 3 now does have DualShock 3 controllers.
I have used both, and the Dualshock 3 has rumble and feels much more sturdy then the original SIXXAXs controller. (Plus it still has the motion feature in it.)
