For Christmas, I'll probably be getting a new graphics card (my one-year-old GeForce3 Ti was already showing its age when I got it last Christmas). Someone in a thread on the old boards suggested getting a card with as much memory as possible (which these days is usually 256MB), but I'm also wanting performance that will keep me reasonably up-to-date for at least a little while.
So, for my budget, I'm trying to decide between a GeForce FX 5600 256MB or a GeForce FX 5900 128MB. The 5900 is almost $100 more than the 5600. It obviously has better performance than the 5600, but it also has half the memory. The 256MB version of the 5900 is well outside my budgetary range, so that's not a consideration, unfortunately.
I'm leaning towards the 5900, since it won't need to be upgraded as soon as the 5600, but I can see that the larger memory on the 5600 may contribute to performance as well (not as much time spent grinding the disk loading textures).
Note that I'm not really considering an ATI card. I've never had good experiences with them, and I've given them two or three chances. I'm not giving them another.
So what do those-in-the-know think about the choices? Is it better to get the better performance or the larger memory?
