Sci-fi started their mini-series remake of Battlestar G. this evening. Did anyone else see it? What did you think?

ROFL - somehow I can't see "Casepoia" "Starbuck" etc in the new century.
Naturally when it hits my land I will see it, but can't picture it. :)

EDIT: What channel is Sci-FI or do you have a webpage so I can have a sneaky look?

Sci-Fi Channel (http://www.scifi.com/battlestar/)

They actually did a better job with it than I thought they would.

No cable?

Do you have phones and electricity where you live?

How can you play online without cable? It would drive me nuts!

I don't have cable. I have DSL.

I don't know anything about this Battelstar Galactica hooha, but everyone always seems to groan whenever the remake is mentioned.

So far I am impressed, as of the first installment. They left enough of the old stuff in there to make it work.

The Cylon attack is scarier than ever... nuf said.

As stated elsewhere...WOW! I was so worried that it would stink to high heaven. I'm not impressed with the acting (except Adama and the new Prez) but I can forgive that for the great story and fighter combat scenes. But, WOW! I mean...just...WOW!

I don't get it; Starbuck and Boomer are women now?
Half of the sub-plots in the original series revolved around Starbuck's, ah, how shall I put this...womanizing? Perhaps?

Be interesting to see how this one goes.

WHAT????? Starbuck is a woman? so what, is Daggit a cat?
I haven't seen it yet. should be interesting though.

I figured they had to make Starbuck and Boomer woman because they needed more gratuatious sex scenes.

I thought I would hate it, but I was actually pretty impressed. I thought the writing was pretty good.

Possible spoilers:[spoiler:b0f3a13dda]They had several nods to the original series, including a shot of the original Cylon Centurion in a museum case. Next to it was a Base Star (probably the original studio model) and the original Cylon Raider. There was a short conversation where one Viper pilot asked what Cylong ships looked like, and the other replied that they looked like a flying wing (which is sort of what the Raiders looked like). They also kept the red ocillating eye in several places. My favourite tribute to the original series was in the ceremony with the Viper flybys during which they played a "military fanfare" (according to the subtitles) which was the original BG theme. It was neat.[/spoiler:b0f3a13dda]
I originally didn't like the idea of a female Starbuck ("buck" is, after all, a term for a male deer -- hmm, doesn't that mean she should be named Stardoe?), but I was pleasntly surprised -- they did a pretty good job having a female Starbuck.

A week or so before the mini-series aired, the SciFi Channel had a special called "Battlestar Galactica: The Lowdown," which had all kinds of nifty behind-the-scenes information. They had a segment where Dirk Bennedict got together with the new female Starbuck at ... guess where? a Starbucks coffee shop and had a good discussion where Dirk basically passed the torch... er, the cigar on to the new Starbuck. It was pretty neat.

In any case, I'm looking forward to the second half.

Ok, I am a huge BSG:original series fan...

Let me breakdown my view of the first half of the show..

Good
[spoiler:8288e34b8b]The theme from the first one during the cerimony, the nastalga for the older Mk2 vipers, and of course the red occilating eye on the only 2 mechanical cylons we saw. I think the story is written much more of a drama, and in some ways reminds me of ID4. And they showed this to be a deadly conflict, between the people lost in the hurt section to the guy that Halo shot off of Boomer's ship.[/spoiler:8288e34b8b]

Bad
[spoiler:8288e34b8b]Being Cheap and making the "new cylons" look human.. and then NEVER showing the inside of the cylon ships. Yes this sets up "drama and suspense" but come on. [/spoiler:8288e34b8b]

and the Ugly!
[spoiler:8288e34b8b]The new vipers were subseptible to this "energy pulse" and the old one weren't.. BAH.. like we wouldnt be shielding our CPUs against EMP pulses. We would not have diviated from technology we knew would work (ie, either both would be effected or neither would).

The never showed the "new battle stars" either.. just some of the new vipers getting wiped out.[/spoiler:8288e34b8b]

Over all, well made. written a little slow, but I am sure tonight will pickup.. I do LOVE the cinematography used to show the vipers.. where they zoom in on them from way out. that is some nice digital work.

Actually, I was very upset when I heard about [spoiler:90b2bc2162]the "human" cylons, [/spoiler:90b2bc2162] BUT, [spoiler:90b2bc2162]did you catch the part where she said there were only 12 like her?[/spoiler:90b2bc2162]

In the old series there were women pilots. I didn't have a big problem with that at all. I thought most of the acting was great, having Edward James Almos there really helps in the drama department.

I really liked [spoiler:90b2bc2162]the fact that they used various directional thrusters to fly in space with because you'd have to have thrusters to change direction in space.[/spoiler:90b2bc2162]

Also, [spoiler:90b2bc2162]not showing the inside of a cylon ship, did you hear the pilot say there was no one flying the cylon craft? That makes me think the cylons built the ships as a robot, kind of like the Trade Federation fighter droids in SW.[/spoiler:90b2bc2162]

[spoiler:1c28d526dd]did you catch the part where she said there were only 12 like her?[/spoiler:1c28d526dd]

[spoiler:1c28d526dd]Actually she said 12 MODELS she is type 6, meaning they have 12 different models of humans, she is 6, 5 might be a male bruennette, 7 might be a red-headed woman...etc..[/spoiler:1c28d526dd]

I haven't tried the spoiler thing yet, but I can tell you [spoiler:e24a7a87ae]it had nothing to do with EMP.[/spoiler:e24a7a87ae]
Spoiler attempt:
[spoiler:e24a7a87ae]Number 6 was in the defense mainframe for a long time. All the up-to-date ships probably interface, and that's how they screwed up the new ships. The Mark II's were old and out of service.[/spoiler:e24a7a87ae]

I admit, I was an old school Galactica fan way back when it first aired on TV. Apollo was my hero! But does anyone here remember the horror that was "Galactica 1980" or am I alone there?

/shudder

I'm not sure I will watch the mini-series when it airs up here in Canada (Space Channel in January). A female Starbuck? I dunno.

Okay, that last scene was downright spooky.
[spoiler:63c7b75052]Are we supposed to think now that Boomer is a cylon? Sleeper agent maybe like number 6 said?[/spoiler:63c7b75052]

the only gripe i have is the sountrack, the fight scense were great, but the drums were weakness, coulda used something, anything better than what they did

spoiler:

[spoiler:6af250924c]the new Mk7 fighters are vulnerable because the doctor who invented the navigation systems was stooping the 'human' cylon, and she put an inherent flaw into each of the systems that the cylons could exploit.[/spoiler:6af250924c]

also yes i enjoyed this new series, even though i am an old school BS fan and am currently scrapping together enough money so i can buy the rerelease of teh series on DVD.

The series was a little too mini for me. The last fight scene was so well done I'll probably never look at the old stuff again.

I hope they make it a series. It could be the next big Sci-Fi following, like B5 was.

Yes, the last scene left me wanting for more. I even had to look through the schedule to see if there was a third part. But the ending definitely leads me to belive that they have the intention to make a series (probably depending on what the ratings are for the mini-series).

In any case, I was one of the original nay-sayers about this series. I was in favor of the Richard Hatch version (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0193000), but I decided to give the SciFi Channel version a chance, and I was pleasantly surprised. I thought the writing was good and the acting was okay and the special effects were spectacular.

So, for those of you who were boycotting this because it's not the original, give it a chance and see if you still don't like it (the whole mini-series will be re-run back-to-back on Sunday at 7pm ET).

over all i think it was well done.. when you watch it notice that the camera is being hand held for alot of shots.. it actually moves a little bit up/down left/right.. etc I think this gives the feeling of more intensity..

the space scene's were great... the way they would pan around and then quickly zoom (and focus) in on one of the crafts.. and there was very little "sounds" unless they were really close to a ship.. gave a sense of realism..

the few things I listed above as bad or ugly seem to deminish in episode 2.. and yea, I would give a new series support!

One thing I liked about the space combat scenes was that the Vipers did turn strafing moves around the Cylons, which would be a very realistic space combat move. They also did things like doing a 180-degree pitch or yaw move while continuing in the same direction of "flight" to shoot things like missiles behind them. I also liked the Cylon move where they would fire missiles and then pitch up perpendicular to the missile path to get away from the firing position.

The only other show I've seen that kept space combat physics in mind is Babylon 5.

Damn!
I so want to watch this now.
I remember going to the cinema with my family to see the original BSG movie. I remember thinking at the time it wasn't as good as Star Wars but I did enjoy and watched the series on teev when I was young.
Hoping the miniseries heads my way asap.

So, what the hell?! Is it only two parts? If so, I feel so robbed! I wonder if Scif Fi Channel blew their entire budget for the year on the special effects and Edward J. Almos' salary!

Kat

I've been told by a reliable Panda, I mean reliable source that Space: Above and Beyond had good space combat physics. Directional thrusters and all. But I have not been able to VERIFY it yet.

/poke reliable source.

I really like the new Battle Star Galactica. I've watched it a few times now and I like the way the story unfolds, and the way the characters are not your standard "cookie cutter" characters.

I especially like that 2 of the characters that have conflicts with each other did not automatically resolve their differences in the standard "happy ending" I've reached out to you and now you forgive me and we are all ok.
[spoiler:1378328640]I'm talking about Starbuck and the XO in this example[/spoiler:1378328640]

Plus they got to say [spoiler:1378328640]frack![/spoiler:1378328640] and [spoiler:1378328640]asshole[/spoiler:1378328640] on TV.

Noob Question...How do you do that blackout spoiler cover up thing?

Second, the miniseries was good overall, I wasn't sure I would enjoy it but I did. I did have a few complaints, but I don't really want to go into them without being able to cover up any spoilers.

Very nice overall though. I would definitely like to see a continuation of it.

Oh yeah, I forgot about S:A&B. Yes, they also had realistic space combat physics. The Hammerheads also had the reaction control thrusters on the canards (the wings on the nose) and the wings.

As for BSG, I'm glad they included that little nod to the original series by including "frack" (although they misspelled it as "frak"). They definitely could have done without saying the reference to anal orifices on TV, though. :(

I thought the "striking a superior @$$#013" (pardon the leet, didn't want to offend) reference was completely in character for starbuck. I was completely upset when I heard they were casting a female actor as starbuck, but I was VERY impressed with the characterization and portrayal when all was said and done.
In the end: I want a series. I only got one season the first time, and there's a lot more plot potential here. Not to mention the lack of crystal ships.

Interesting remake.
The cylon ships don't need to show the cylons inside; the cylon fighter ships ARE the cylons.
Lots of questions still unanswered.
Is Boomer really a Cyclon, or did they copy her for their model? What will the chief do when he's told, or when he accepts that she is if she is? And if she is, will she adhere to her original program?
Are all the humanoid cyclons based on a real human model?
Is Baltar human, cylon (and doesn't know it), human with a cylon implant (which is why he keeps seeing you know who all the time), or crazy (because he keeps seeing you know who all the time)?
Adama admitted to the president that there is no earth; but will time show there is a basis to the legends for them to pursue?
Col Teig IS a coward and an alcoholic; will we see him overcome it, just drag on, or spiral down and drag a huge bunch of people with him.
Is this Starbuck smart enough to keep a record of a certain superior a$$40l3's violations of regulations and poor judgements to keep her own butt out of hock?
The president is right, 50,000 people aren't enough to maintain a viable species, especially in a hostile environment, unless they start breeding like, well, rabbits. Most pregnant women can do most jobs up until a couple of days before to a few days after delivery. (Yeah a lot still can't.) How will modern women react to being suddenly turned into baby machines for 1/4 to 1/2 of the rest of their lives? Especially if they are expected to continue to be as productive socio-economically?
