so i recently formated my hard drive to sleek down my programs and free up some memory that some god-awful spy-ware and dialer programs refused to leave, when i rebooted and reinstalled everything things were peachy for about a week, then i start getting a message telling me a registry key is missing and that it has been recovered by log or alternate copy and that it had been recovered succefully....

it lied
it lied like rug

all my prog's were either gliching out or just plain refused to work, so i think i got a bug, virus scan the whole drive, worm scan the whole drive, trojan scan and nothing, so i start digging around and see that other people have had the same problems and that the prob goes away with a system restore, well i had just formated so with out a restore point i reformated again, and guess what, one week of nomalness and bam, same message, a registry key is missing but no worries it has been recovered.....more lies, why oh why computer, why have you forsaken me, i feed you ram, i defrag your harddrive, i got you that nice graphics card, and this is my reward......

so reformat again this time i dont do the sp1 patch off the windows update site, i had read that this might be the cause of my problems, but again one week and blam, but instead of formating again i patched the sp1 and alot of other patches and it seems to be working now, i have read this might be symptoms of harddrive corruption and that the bugger might be about to completly die on me and was wondering if anyone out there has had similar problems and what they did to fix them, and if it is harddrive failure let me know, so i can get to shopping, thank you for any help you guys can offer

this was on the luclin F&R board (http://www.eqluclin.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3041) so it probably has language not quite permissable for the youngins, but apparently there's a company out there called NetPal who uses activeX to mess with your registry in such a fashion that spyware removal programs will miss it but it will still bork your system.
the important link from that thread though (i think...):
