How do I make my avatar look less scetchy?

I had to lower the quailty of my pic so it fit the required size, but ive seen some other "finer detailed" pics around, how is that done without making the file too big??

Try a different format, like PNG.

Compressed jpgs will deliver the best bang for the buck though.

And the sketchy feel of the image may have more to do with how the image was created than with how it was saved.

PS7 (if you have it) has the 'save for web' function has a 'save to filesize' feature that will compress your JPG to exactly what you need filesize wise.
