My PC died over the weekend and I need some help with my diagnosis. From my troubleshooting, where I'm currently at is this;

If I unplug the 4 pin, 12V connector from my MB (AsRock MB, 3Gig P4 cpu) and turn on the power, my hard drives spin up, the CPU and case fans start spinning but the PC doesn't start to boot. If I plug in the 4 pin, 12V connector and turn the power on, I get the power LED (jumpered from the MB to the case) but nothing else happens. The cpu and case fans don't spin, the hard drives don't spin up. I've tried swapping out the power supply already and the behavior is the same.

So, it looks like there is something in the 12V circuitry that is cauing my power supply to crowbar (turn itself off) and short of replacing my MB (not like I have spares laying around) I'm not sure what else I could look at.

Any help/ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

motherboard broken or shorting somewhere, might be a good idea to remove it, check for any metal touching it, etc.

If not working afterward, yeah, probally dead mb.

Tried having only mobo and drives connected and then powerring up (removing all cards including video)? Also, try taking the mobo out of your case on on top of a piece of cardboard then powerring up to check for shorts.

Thanks for the replies, I'm pretty convinced now that the MB toasted. :( While I preach mail order for cost, this is the times I curse it. :p Mail it back, 5 to 7 days after they receive it they;ll send me either the repaired or replaced board. Fun fun. :)

thanks again for the replies.

Could also possibly be your CPU itself.
