View Full Version : ISP not allowing me to see gucomics

Hey,
I've been having this problem since.. oh.. hmm... beginning-to-middle of january, I believe.
the problem is, that I cannot access gucomics.com at all, from me home.
(right now I'm not at home, and can access it just fine).
my little brother and I have two different ISPs (I have bredbandsbolaget.net and he has telia.com, these are two of the largest ISPs in sweden).. he can access it just fine, I can't access at all.
so there, that is the problem. no other servers are affected by this - that I know of.
a week after this started I *could* access it.. for a day. then it dissapeared again.
anyone know anything that might help?
Thank you,
Eleriel,
the reckless angel.

Do you use DSL or a similar technique? And is your computer connected to the modem directly?

Do you know if your ISP does blacklisting? It sounds somewhat like your ISP has decided that whoever is on the net that gucomics uses are evil spammers, and not worth talking to.
Debugging connectivity problems, the steps I go through typically include (these are all unix commands):
dig gucomics.com (what address does gucomics use?)
ping gucomics.com (can I get to that address?)
traceroute gucomics.com (what path across the Internet will I use?)
telnet gucomics.com 80 (Can I connect to the HTTP server?)
If your ISP is indeed indulging in blacklisting websites, the only cure is to switch ISPs.

Cannot access as in? do you get a browser error, did you try to ping it?
The chances of a http page being blocked by your provider are quite slim. It's more likely your own firewall/browser causing the issue.

Earlier this year I started having problems with some web sites at home, hotmail was one, and a few others. It turned out my isp changed their MTU window. So it's possible your pc and/or home gateway MTU settings are too large. If you've done any tcp/ip speed ups to your machine, that would typically change this value.

heh... sending all this information to my e-mail so I can access it at home.. and try from there.
as for the setup at home:
typically three computers and one xbox connected through a netgear router to the net. the router has some ports open to my computer only, so I can use bit-torrent.
I have heard that some ISPs blacklist (the one I had before this does, I'm told. but BBB doesn't. in fact, they're been very clear that they *don't*.)
besides if they'd blacklisted gucomics, then it would be odd for me to suddenly be able to reach it for a day, and then not.
Unix commands eh? is there any way to do the same thing in WinXP?

ping gucomics.com (can I get to that address?)
tracert gucomics.com (what path across the Internet will I use?)
telnet gucomics.com 80 (Can I connect to the HTTP server?)
These 3 work in a dosbox in xp

Alright.
I sent that in an e-mail to myself, so I could check it at my home-computer. and these are the results.

That brings us back to heybirders idea about the MTU size.
You can try and use BeFaster lite (http://www.ekremdeniz.com/lite/download.htm) to change your MTU settings. In theory, if the MTU size is really the problem it must not be bigger than 1492. If that doesn't work, try smaller settings in sizes of 8 till it works.
The last time I used it BeFaster had a wizard to optimize MTU size for the network speed. I guess that should work for you too.

I'll try that. and see what happens.

id also think you could call the ISP and just claim you need to access that net for your job and unless they open it they loose you as a customer.

Still no change in the order of things.
also.. as I'm not living alone, and am not the one paying for the connection I can't verily make that threat.
also... BBB is the *only* broadband-ISP in my area... if I were to change, I'd have to go down to an ADSL again *cringe*.
though... ah well, we'll just have to see what happens.
