View Full Version : Dragon Contest
sup all,
Ive started some rough drafts today, have them posted on www.RollingIndustries.com (for all those who might of missed the link before, heh)
Woody's 14 years of professinalism is quite impressive, considering Im only 17, and have only just begun to delve into computer enhanced editing. As for a cartoonist, ive only been one for rought half a year now, but have been a life long artist.
Now I hear that many other people want to give drawing dragons a try, this certainly has behooved me. I'm always willing to compare to others, but Woody's got a good reputation, so he's my main competitor.
For everyone else whos drawing, I wish you luck, have fun and don't die before its done! (or after)

One thing i have to say, "Mmm detail. " Yeah i would post my "Dagron" but its at school hanging in a classroom rrrr (shakes fist). Ill have to start sketching one at lunch or in Chemistry when poeple in my class start asking retarded questions.
hmm... I guess scanned in "pencil" just shows up like crap. Oh well, just a rough copy, the rest is all computer edited.
I should have my 2nd image out-lined and colored by tomorrow. Get more detail in, start adding some little people and finally the back ground. I don't know what I would do if they didn't have layers!
Woody
12-02-2003, 04:30 PM
Well... I wouldn't consider myself your competitor, as I'm not drawing anything new. You're competing against the work I've already done.
**shrugs**
I was just inviting other people to play along.
did you mean you "wouldn't consider"
just curious, Ive made that mistake far too often, especially during those MMORPG games.

MCW, those are pretty nice dragons, I have a sketch of one I have drawn, I jsu tneed to look around to see if I still have that scanner o' mine.
MCW, heres a tip on scanning, use pen on top of your pencil, or DEEPLY shade everything in, if it looks normal to you, it needs to be darker.
Ciarin
12-02-2003, 08:34 PM
When I scan pencil, I set my scanner to "dark"
also, I think your dragons look pretty good so far.
edit:
argh!! I've been through 3 drafts already!! my dragons are so sucky.

12-03-2003, 05:03 AM
I hear that, Ciarin. Skipping sleep to try and pencil out a dragon, I haven't been this frustrated trying to draw something in a long, long while. I've been tagging quotes from "Half Baked" onto all the failures, which insofar has been all of them.
EDIT: Bah! Present-tense, past-tense... time for bed.

Good job everyone, keep up the good work!
Im glad this turning into somthing better than it had started.
It'll be nice to see what everyone has to show, really makes you think about drawing in different ways.
Its amazing how true the statment is "power leads to corruption"
well everyone have fun and good luck, lets see this through!

Attempt No.3: The Baby (http://www.geocities.com/melishawgray/baby.html). Couldn't finish it, can't draw legs.
Attempt No.5: Queen (http://www.geocities.com/melishawgray/lady.html). Probably the result I'm happiest with. STILL can't draw legs. And the wing doesn't work with the rest of the body, dunno. Doesn't look right to me. Still no detailing, scales, etc.
...
..... and what do you mean, "power leads to corruption", MCW?
What I meant about "power leads to corruption" was that in the past, and still in today. When people gain power, they seem to lose who they are and abuse it.
I was reminded of this, by how I was acting before, I came from being the most popluar/famous artist in my city. I still acted like I had that power, but I really did'nt, not with this community. And reliezing that, has helped me see more clearly what everyone is saying and what they meant.
Stalin would be a good example of corrupting power

I have it posted at http://www.rollingindustries.com/favorite.htm
as you can there are still many minor errors in there, spots I missed and some black lines "god knows how they got there"
I gave a shot at scales, I have several versions of this, so I can always go backwards, I Didn't finish all the shading as you can see, I plan on adding a more in-depth background. And a dash of smoke across the front. enjoy!

Excellent dragons! Definately gives me inspiration to find a way to upload my dragon on da puter.
I personally liked Velenka's(sp) best, but Woody's and others came in a VERY close second.
Now to find a webpage provider..
wonder if we should have contests like this every month, It certainly involves the community with Woody, probably more now than in the past.
but how would I know, I'm new. I hope my arrival for the best, even though I had the worst introduction.

Of any online cartoonist, I think Woody is far more involved in his community than most. He's always answering e-mails, moderating these forums, and plays the game when he can.
And you wouldn't know, MCW.
Maybe keep that in mind next time you feel the need to post about something like this. When you speak with ignorance, people assume you are ignorant.

As if my dragon was any better than a vicious duck. I essentially said, 'Hello, Mr. Concept of Art. I'm here to beat you senseless with a baseball bat, and then tape you to a cat. Is that okay with you? Good. Meet my dragon.'
That reminds me. Are we limited to one entry? Because I think I can make a dragon with a laser on it's head.

is Ulead Photoimpact better than adobe, or is it just your program of choice?
Other than that, good job coloring!
Ciarin
12-04-2003, 10:14 PM
It's the program I've been using for the past 6 yrs and therefore I know how to use it with ease.
Adobe still mystifies me. And I fear what I do not understand.....
I sorta just muddled my way through coloring the dragon.
as computer programs go, ive no experience but about 2 months with adobe, and thats only when ive colored my pictures, which has only been like 7, everyone on my website thats colored is everyone ive colored in the past.
Before that, I was mostly just ink/paper, sometimes colored pencil. I enjoy art a lot, but its not really my main passion. Ive been on and off with art, revolving it around politics. Wish I was a better speller though, it could help much.
But for just somthing new you've got some good looking textures, would make a good background smoke effect. For my scales I used the "stained glass" effect, but its my first time and there is much more editing that I'd perfer to do.

Greetings all, longtime lurker here. I am something of an admirer of artistic talent and I would very much like to become involved in the field of graphic arts some day. I was wondering, was drawing something you were simply "able to do" or was it something you were able to cultivate over time? I ask because right now, I couldn't draw a stick figure if I was given a template and special stick-maker-3000 stick figure drawing pencils and I'm finding it somewhat frustrating. =/
ive started drawing people about a year and half ago, so, Im guessing anyone can do it. I've started to help some of the people that have a difficult time with art, and ive seen even the worst art student go to be fairly decent. So I would assume it just takes practice and the right advice.
I believe drawing is like almost any other talent. You will have a certain amount of natural ability, some will have more than others and everything else you will have to train / practice in. Schooling is definately a good route for most people. Understanding Anatomy is a must if you want to be a "realistic" artist. And art classes, obviously.
But certainly practice, practice, practice.

heh I loved this little site... great for those of us that can't draw heh
Ciarin

I could draw ever since elementary school. I've honed my craft ever since then.
My first real drawing that wasn't scribble was in 3rd or 4th grade science class. I was doing a thing on hummingbirds and I wanted to use a picture of a hummingbird I found in national geographic. So I drew it. It looked exactly like the bird in the photo, and so when my mom saw it she started getting me into art.
Animals are what I could draw best at first. When I tried people it usually sucked, but I got better at it.
I wish I had my old portfolio, I think it would be cool to see a montage of how my work progressed.

The Mr.Picassohead drawings are really well done! I'm suprised.
As for me... I started drawing sometime around 3rd or 4th grade. I actually remember drawing a my cat, who was asleep at the time, and I was really proud of it. It probably was pretty assy, but it was all the motivation I needed. I've just been doodling ever since.
I've yet to actually take a drawing class, lol. All of my art classes in highschool were Jewelry, Photography, and Band (yeah...our school considered band as art credits). I did manage to take an Advanced Painting class in Highschool without pre-reqs, somehow...I almost failed.
So I'm self-taught, pretty much. Acrylics, watercolor, and CG coloring along side pencil.. I'll be able to take some college art classes next year, which can be written off as a business expense for the company my dad and I are starting :D :D :D. Yay! Formal training!
I think anybody can learn to draw. If people can learn to paint with their toes, ANYONE can learn to draw with their hands. I believe it all boils down to how determined you are to push the limits of your ability, and how much patients you have with yourself. Inborn creativity (ei. the muse/source of ideas) doesn't hurt, either, but I believe that can be a part of the brain one can nurture to life if the determination is there.
EDIT: RE, nice! I really like that dragon :) You lied when you said you had no drawing skills, bucko.
Dr.Gonzo
12-06-2003, 06:21 AM
I have always drawn. Never felt I could'nt or that I was good or bad, I would just draw my favorite comic character, wolverine (pre-image) then my role-playing characters.
Good news is I believe that everyone can learn to draw if it is important enough. Learning to draw is when those formulas for building faces and bodies come in handy. The important thing is not to be too hard on yourself and draw stuff you really like to start, IMO

only way to host a picture from your computer is to turn your computer into a web server. Which is really...really...really dangerous unless you have some heavy duty defenses. get a cheap web host like FuitadNet (http://www.fuitadnet.com) and a domain and you'll have all the web linking you'll need at your fingertips.

Village photos (http://www.villagephotos.com/) is a free picture hosting site that works pretty good for short term stuff.

Ok, I finally got my dragon I made in 10th grade (http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-12/528208/dragon1.jpg) uploaded on a site. I never really did dragons often, maybe a total of 3 pictures. This was my first one, still the best in my opinion.

Heh, that Mr. Picassohead site is pretty neat (http://mrpicassohead.com/canvas.html?id=559e90f). =)
And as far as dragon-related work is concerned, here's a generic looking dragon head thingie. (it's hosted on *shudder* geocities, so you'll have to paste the url into a new window)
www.geocities.com/deltadragon2/dud.avi
Bryaugh
12-06-2003, 11:47 PM
Yeah, geocities doesn't like remote linking, so clicking on the link won't work. Only around it is to open up a new browser window then paste in the url. Right click then save-as works sometimes also.
If anyone could reccomend a good (and free) file host, I'd be very appreciative. :)

I haven't scanned in or completed a dragon for ages, but since some folks seem to be rehashing older pieces, I thought I'd add in my two bits. Dragons have often been more of a "doodle" subject for me, however one of the first things I tinkered with in Photoshop turned out to to be one of my favorite pieces, even now. He's named Kliamath, and you can find him here (http://web2.airmail.net/naomi/gallery/digital/kliamath.html) and here (http://web2.airmail.net/naomi/images/kliamathhd.gif). He was done completely freestyle with nothing more than a mouse and Photoshop 2.0's gradient and lasso tool.

I wanted to enter this "contest" but my scanner is on the fritz so I don't have any way to make a drawing digital. I was thinking about starting it in Photoshop using my tablet, but that's not the best way to do this kind of art. :\

There aren't really many good, free hosts anymore. Bandwidth is expensive. I suggest finding a nice, cheap host; like this place (http://www.fuitadnet.com).

Wheres our Unicorn, Vel!
A Unicorn for Dreleen (http://velenka.digital-panda.net/unicorn.jpg)
I have mixed feelings about this picture. Mostly I'm just glad that I was able to draw an animal without it looking kind of human-ish. My animals usually turn out that way... this one didn't, but there's a whole host of other things.. yeah, I'll shut up now.
Ciarin
12-14-2003, 11:27 PM
awesome.
some small c/c though. I think the ears are a little pointy, and the eye should be a bit bigger.
Velenka
12-14-2003, 11:53 PM
Not to mention......the nose/snout is too small for the rest of the head, the nostril the near-side of the nose is upside-down, the musculature on the neck is all wrong, and the horn doesn't sit naturally, it's off center, and is slanted off the forhead.
I have developed a love-hate relationship with that picture, lol.

Well, I just attributed all those things to style...reminds me of the horses used in Sleeping Beauty.

Oh, dear god.. the eyes.. the vacant, soulless eyes.. always they haunt me in the Faydark.. the evil minion of hell itself comes for me, with a horn jutting out of its skull, the gnashing teeth wanting to devour me.. and the elves like them!
The horror.. the horror..
(in other words, I like it. just keep it the hell away from me)

Yeah me too. I hate that damn Unicorn in Lesser Faydark. And that Pixie that laid waste to Semedhi. /shiver

Thats actually very good Velenka. Like I've said before art doesn't always have to be photorealistic. Cartoons and animation rarely are. :D

Yes size does matter 8)~
Great sketch Vel!
Seeing everyone's dragons, I thought I might throw out my dragons for show. I havent really drawn much lately... no dragons from the few things I have recently drawn so these are a bit old (if unfinished), but I figured I havent posted in a while and this was a good excuse as any.
Flying dragon (http://julirama.homestead.com/files/dragon_wv.jpg) (1999)
Psuedo dragon (http://julirama.homestead.com/files/Dragon1_wv.jpg) (1999)
These two ceramic sculptures were finished in 1998. (I did these in high school) Please pardon the poor quality pictures. I'd have taken new pictures, but the teapot is in some landfill somewhere i imagine and the sculpture is at my folks house.

Yeah Tati owns. That's why she was given the Original Ding! strip. She's my #1 fan.
At the same time though, she's incredibly humble.
She wouldn't believe me so I had to make her talk to Keith Parkinson so that he could tell her she was doing a pretty good job.
