This is one I am working on currently, just a wee snippet ;-)
==================
Michael lit his cigarette and snapped the Zippo closed, taking a deep drag on the cancer stick before speaking.
“Khalid is one of the Order’s best agents. If the Diabolists have smuggled the book into Damascus, he’ll know about it.”
“Still,” Mathias said, “Would it not be prudent to send my operatives to the other sites as back up? We can cover more ground. I can have a team in Angkor Wat in four hours, and two more on site in Nan Madol and New Grange in five.”
“No,” Michael replied, eyes shut as he listened to the steady staccato drumming of the rain on the roof of the car, “They are headed for Damascus. They need the Scepter of Anat to complete the first part of the ritual to open the doorway.”
“And you know for sure the Scepter is there?”
“Yes,” Michael sighed, taking another drag off of the cigarette, “Knights of the Order secured it during the second crusade, but were unable to smuggle it out. It is hidden in the tomb of one of the knights. The Templars have kept its location a secret for centuries.”
“Ah,” Mathias said, reaching under his jacket, “That would explain why the SS was unable to locate it when the Nazis tried to locate the artifacts seventy years ago. Well, I hate to say it, my friend, but we’ll take it from here.”
As he spoke, Mathias pulled his pistol from its shoulder holster and put the muzzle under Michael’s raised arm, above his body armor and in line with the heart. Michael jerked his arm down and threw himself forward instinctively, but Mathias was faster. Searing pain and acrid smoke were Michael’s last senses as all turned black and silent.
