Right, I normaly go out with my mate and his fiance quite often.
Now the night I don't go out with them, my best mate gets glassed in the face and had to be rushed to casulty.

Several stitches needed and perminant scarring.

I'm livid, angry, enraged, possessed, anything you could call somone who is ultimately pi**ed off.

The guy dropped the broken glass and ran off, no one saw where he went.
My friend thought it was a jab to the face, but wasn't until he noticed all the blood that he realised he'd been glassed.

Man if i was there my 8 years of jujitsu would have cramped down on the punk that did that, I probably would have killed him!

I'm shaking i'm so angry about this. He's a nice bloke been a life long friend and not the type of person to deserve this crap.

If they can't get anything from the CCTV then there is no action to be taken.

Oh I really hope they find him on CCTV. Ohhh he'll pay for the GBH!!
Was a scrotty little guy too..

Sorry about this, but gotta get this off my chest before I go nuts and start breaking things.

Wish I could think of a suitable, calming/comforting response to that.
Best I can say is, sorry mate. *edit* Ya can't be in two places at once. Nobody can.*
The way this sounds though, in a way, it's almost good you weren't there. Your friend would still be on his way to the hospital and you'd either be in jail or on the run.
Hope they catch the blaggart that did it.

True, I suppose..
I've calmed down a lot.

Going to see how he is when he gets back from the police station.

Unfortunately, English law is not very condusive to allowing self-defense, and Coffee is right, you likely would have wound up in jail and the cac ar oineach who glassed your mate would be suing you. Frustrating, I know.

I think we're going to stop going to that specific club.

I wouldn't mind spending time in a cell agian, if it ment the guy who attacked my mate got caught and could be taken to court.
We're now waiting to see if anything was picked up on CCTV.
Which probably only got the back of his head.

Sucks that my mate has to wait on luck of CCTV in order to get any compensation.

Anyway, will wait and see.

I don't think I'm the only one who doesn't know what CCTV is, any explination?

Close Cercuit Telyvision.

Basicaly, secuiry cameras positioned in and around popular meeting places. To try and prevent crimes. Or in my case, offer evidence.

I think this is a great idea myself. They've talked about doing it more here in the States, but everyone cries, "Invasion of privacy." This is off topic and deserving of it's own thread I think. I just really don't have the time at the moment to start one.

Either way, hope your buddy makes a full recovery. That really sucks. I hope that y'all are able to find who did it. That's just absolute cowardace to the worst degree there.

Well, i'm starting a petition to the government.
Banning glass in pubs and clubs everywhere in the UK if I can.
They're supposed to use a specific type glass that is very brittle, and just crumbles and shatters instead of breaking into jagged parts.

Anyway, I have the support of one organiser, and I will begin making phone calls to various officials after the Bank Holiday.

Persistance is probably my best quality, I'll keep at it.

seems a worthwhile cause. there is little reason save cost to not use either plastic or tempered glass (breaks into very small peices instead of jagged bits) in a club. Its cheaper for the club to just hand out beer bottles though, so they do it even though they put up a metal detector at the door and take away fingernail clippers and keys at entry they then hand you a very much lethal weapon ful of beer for a couple pounds (or bucks or what-have-you)

Seems the Irish propensity for bar fighting *whistles innocently* created a whole new industry :-)

Yeah, but you put a couple of glasses worth of beads into a sock and you have an interesting bar weapon.

Easier to break bones, harder to cut jugulars. I'd take the bruises and broken bones.

Actually some time ago Irish police used to put potatoes in a sock and use it as a weapon. Now if that's not ingenious I don't know what is.

I dislike how you cannot react to a violent act with more violence. It's the principles of things ("Violence is only met with more violence."). Now a days, you get a self-defense plea and a minimum of 3 years (I believe).

Well saying 'use a sock' with various items in is fair enough, but thats premeditated. I'm talking about spurr of the moment. Pint glass in hand, pint in glass, face nearby, connect the two. A potatoe? Thats hardly nasty at all. I've seen much worse used in a sock for a fight. Also, the irish came up with rubber bullets. I mean, please... What does rubber do best? BOUNCE!!
Copper: Shoot the rubber bullets! *BANG!*
Some sod: *BOING!* "Ow, what was that?"
Copper: "CRAP IT'S COMING BACK!"

Aye Breandan, we're supposed to use that type of glass too. Either some clubs don't, or its not good enough.

Well, I should be seeing my friend later today, will discuss what he wants to do about the situation.

Breandan

the RUC started the whole rubber bullet thing, hardly any Gardaí carry guns at all because most of the Irish (outside of the cities) are more afraid of their family matrons, and the Garda officer has only to shout "Hey, Ó Leary, you want me to go get your grandma' and have her see what you're on about here? Didn't think so!" :D How's your friend doing?

Update: He's ok, the swelling has gone down, not a lot, but its noticable.

The glass used wasn't in any way safe. It cracked and slashed the skin open, gaining access to his inner cheeks. He had to have several stitches inside and outside of the mouth.
His fiance who saw it happen about 1foot away is still shocked over the incident (she hates violence) and she's not eating or sleeping well.

Police are still checking into the situation, and i've got the backing for a petition by several people and already one organiser.

My friend seems mentaly ok, obviously not wanting to go to that specific club anymore. I couldn't see much of the wound as it had clotted and had stiching tape over the area.

As of Tuesday i'll be contacting our local community officer to have a whee chat.

I feel your pain Daiv. When I was a sofomore(sp?) in highschool, my best friend since we were in 1st got piped in the face on a cracker day. The day I decide to chill at lab instead of roam and talk like usual during our lunch break and its the day he could really have used me. I was known in my school for reacting in kind to violent situations, so where me and mine are most suitors of cracker day aren't. Never could find out who the bastard was to retaliate properly, and my bud got so fed up he dropped out..

Banning glass won't help. Dorks (I'd use a stronger word but...) will find a way to do harm no matter what is available.

I do hope someone finds this guy and I do hope he gets all that he deserves. I like to think that some justice happens even if not from the officials. Perhaps he will step out on the street at just the wrong time.

Yes, however most weapons of choice in a bar or outside tend to be of the blunt variety, which tend not to cause permenent scarring or fatal wounds.

Plus a drunk person is going to think "heavy object' not "heavy object that will cause jagged wounds" when swinging a glass.

I can't imagine why they wouldn't use the type of glass mentioned. It's also safer to clean up, which is quite often in a rowdy bar.

Gods I only wish Dublin was like that still. Went out to have a couple of drinks the other night with a friend of mine, and made the mistake of entering the city. Friday nights are not a fun time. Some punk tried to pull a knife on me a week or so ago for telling his friend off about stealin a smoke from my mouth- in broad daylight.
Basically what I'm saying is, good luck with your petition et al- anything to make the world a bit of a better place.

That sucks mate, I've had knives pulled on me too. Its quite scary. :/
Thanks for yoru support peeps..

"Dorks (I'd use a stronger word but...) will find a way to do harm no matter what is available. " Well, people around here, if they want to harm you, they use whatever is on hand. A lot of people take pleasure in causing as much damage as possible.
Its quite often that i'm walking down the road to overhear a teen saying "Oh mate i propper bottled 'im! Then I stamped on 'is 'ead!".
Some pubs + clubs actually glue ashtrays down, so people don't steal them, and are not used as weapons.

Just last night, there was a group of Chavs causing trouble and giving my neighbour and friend hassle. Throwing stones and bricks at their house. But when I turn up and start shouting, they drop everything (including their football) and run!
Well at least we got a football out of it :D

Local Neds acting up eh? Sorry to hear that. Especially since I'll be moving to that area, or very near there, in just a few months.

Daiv
08-30-2005, 05:03 AM
Neds are only dangerous if they've been drinking and are more than 3 in numbers, in my experience anyway :P
They're also typical cowards.

Those I scared off were surprised, I kinda came out of nowhere (it was a poorly lit area) 8)
