The talk of spiders in the ' Taking care of a new pet' thread got me thinking. What's everybody afraid of?
Me, Spiders, and most bugs in general ( expect for ladybugs and ants, ants just gross me out.)
Heights and since grade two whenI almost got hit by a car, cars and honking horns.
So...how about the rest of ya?

Deep water. I mean, where I can't see beneath me, I get this horrible irrational fear that something's gonna grab me and pull me under for all time. (TYVM Mr. Lovecraft! And seeing Jaws fairly young didn't help either).
Also, crowds. Particularly when I'm alone and can't find where I'm going. Like in a packed stadium looking for the bathroom, I've had panic attacks. Not often but I have.
With both of these things though I force myself to go do them, lest I let my fear rule me. I haven't conquered them yet but I'm workin on it :P

Lets see, what does Rookie fear...?
1. Kork being a role model
2. getting mauled by a bear, that'd make an athiest christian fast.
3. Water
If somebody were a vampire, this would be the way to find out: if they say Sunlight, Holy Water, Stakes, and Mirrors

1. Being a role model.
2. Barbie doll esque women.
3. Holy water
4. My apartment... (It's damn creepy at night, and my roomate jumping me from dark corners doesn't help)
5. Pointy things, stakes and such.
6. My bird... It has the beadiest eyes. It's so cute but so menacing at the same time.
7. Heights.
8. Sunlight.
9. Deep water.
10. Vampires.

Deep water would be my only true fear.
I mean theres other things that will instill fear in me but thats usually for my own survival (hey this drop in front of me is a mile down, I should stay away from the edge) and always a fear I can set aside if I want to.
Deep water though is an irrational fear that I can never shake no matter how hard I try. If I cant see or feel the bottom, I dont want to be swimming in it. I know that theres nothing dangerous there (for the most part, depends on where you are swimming I guess), I know that nothing is going to grab me or anything stupid like that, I'm not really worried about anything thats in the water.
Its the huge amounts of dark nothingness that put a sense of horror in me that is beyond description. Like if I stay out on top of that empty void long enough i'll fall into it and become nothing myself. Its a completely helpess feeling.
The bigger the water the worse it gets for me, I can swim in a pool no problem, small creeks are fun too, rivers, lakes or the ocean I will swim in but you will never catch me far from shore. :)
Boats are ok too as long as they are stable and I stay inside it.

Dying, heights, and creepy animals/bugs.
Heights never used to bother me untill I was lik 12 at a football stadium, I got this horrible vertigo going down the stairs in the nosebleeds, and have had wierd nightmares about being sucked off of the roof of tall structures ever since. Ide Lie flat on the roof in my dreems in the middle of the roof, but it would still try to suck me off.

I have the deep water fear but for a weird reason- I am afraid of sea dead, i.e., the spirits of those who died at sea coming up to claim the living and drag them down to join them (thank you superstitious Irish upbringing  )
Other than that, failing my family and my people, being responsible for the fates of others, and living a pointless life. So far, the being responsible for the fates of others is the only one I have been stuck dealing with 8)

Oh I forgot to add, hidden pitfalls or wholes etc.
One of my worst fears is running along and just having the ground fall out from under you. It's pretty abstract and I wouldn't be afraid of it had it not actually happened to me. Running through downtown at 2:45am because my stupid friend Jason and I wanted Wendies and I fell into a big window well, about six feet down. I got very lucky and rolled when I landed, so I only sprained my wrist, but still it was scary.
I have two serious fears, close friends dieing. Myself being eaten, mostly by a shark because we humans arn't very great of getting away from them.
Deep water doesn't bother me much, its the being eaten part that does.

I'm not afraid of heights.
I'm not afraid of falling from heights.
I'm afraid of that sudden stop at the end of the fall.
Seriously though, to the best of my knowledge I have no phobias. Possible I actually do have one and have not discovered such as yet.
I guess the closest I can think of is ceasing to be me. To lose that intangible quality about myself that makes me unique from the others...maybe that's why I never liked the Star Trek shows with the Borg.

Reminds me of that scene from Austin Powers.
"Only two things scare me, and one of them is nuclear war."
"What's the other one?"
"Carnies."
For me, I don't like certain heights, as mentioned in the Grand Canyon thread. I can't go on roller coasters. Clowns have unsettled me since Stephen King's IT. Aside from that, I'm pretty jaded/fearless.

I'm not terribly fond of spiders. Other than that, I don't really have any real "phobias".
I am terrified, however, of something happening to my parents. They're getting at an age where I know it's inevitable. My dad has had several heart operations and the thought of something happening to them is gut wrenching.

I used to have two very deep fears when I was a child. Well, actually up until a couple of years ago. Demons and dying in my sleep. I would not sleep at night because of both. I guess it was more like terror, really. If I thought there was a demon in my bedroom, I would freeze up. I couldn't move. I don't know why, I never saw any movies with demons in them, and my parents never tried to scare us with them. Although....my mom saw a demon while she was pregnant with me. Hmm....

My uncle is 10 years older than me... when he was a teen I used to be with him a lot and I'm fairly certain looking back on it that there was more than a little pot being used (not by my small child self). Well it occured to him and his friends that it would be great for me to watch Jaws a few times... at 4 years old.
I'm not afraid of water per se but just of sharks - to the point that if I'm in a swimming pool and a bunch of bubbles rise up after someone jumps in or if I move quickly, I'll have to work really really hard to fend off a panic attack. My whole life I've been working to train myself so that if I'm ever somehow stranded in water or should something scary come upon me, I'll faint. It's been work but I think I'm at the point where I have no survival instinct whatsoever.
Snakes scare me - but I'm working on that, when one moves into the area of their homes, it's not the snakes to blame so I'm adapting. Spiders give me the willies but I'm improving.
In fact.. not that long ago - maybe last year, my oldest son decided I was afraid of everything including Pop, I told him there was NO WAY a soft drink could scare me.. probably.

Spiders are my only major fear I can think of right now. I think everyone at FIRST GLANCE dislikes anything they think as "ugly," so spiders would fit in there, but some people adapt to them, and some even enjoy them.

Moldy cheese. You heard me I'm afraid of moldy cheese! Cheese is my favorite food so seeing it mold just scares the $#^%$ out of me. And fish after you catch them and they flop around. I caught a bunch of bluegills and one jumped out of the bucket and spined me in the leg :( And Slipknot. But only in person. Their music I like but if I ever saw them in person I think I'd have a heart attack. Specially Craig. He has spikies on his head.
Edward
08-28-2005, 08:12 PM
When I first learned how to fish, and I caught one, but had no bucket, so I put it on a large rock next to me (was at the beach), and it kept flipping and flopping for a good 20 minutes, I thought it was alive but learned that they die rather quickly out of water and it's a nerve system thing that makes em still go even though they're dead.
Oh yeah, and about Slipknot http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/0817052slipknot1.html I didnt like them before, and now they seem like morons because of that.

I'm terrified of deep water. I can swim in pools just fine, but get me in water where I can't see what's below me and I completely freak out.
I also have serious problems with crowds. Christmas shopping is beyond a nightmare for me. I usually try to do most of it online or at bizarre hours of the morning/night just so I don't have to be in crowds. I avoid malls like the plague. I've actually been known to start hyperventilating and getting dizzy when I get closed in by a crowd of people.
My worst fear, though, is anything satanic. My step-father made me watch The Exorcist in the dark sitting on a stool with nothing to my back when I was nine. It truly scarred me for life. I don't have any problem with monsters, vampires, slashers, etc. But throw in even the slightest demonic slant to any of the above and I will come unglued.

I'm not partial to bees.
Mostly the only thing I think I can say I fear is dieing safe in bed having done nothing particularly useful with my life. I'd rather go out doing something than just waiting to expire.
Thankfully, I don't fear letting down my friends, family or even the human race because I try to do what seems best for them all every day of my life. Which, I suppose would nullify the problem of the paragraph above. Still, I'd rather not be laying in a hospital bed waiting for the insurance money to run out.
If I thought there was a demon in my bedroom
I don't mean to make light of your fear. I had a comment, though. If I woke up and found what I thought was a real demon in my bedroom, and assuming I wasn't instantly extinguished, a whole new career opportunity or at least hobby would open up to me.

I can't swim...but I am not afraid of deep water. I don't particularly like the look of spiders but they don't freak me out.
Mice...totally terrified of mice. Odd part is while I am still scared of live mice, I freak out more when I see a dead one.
Heights...can't go on roller coasters, airplanes anything more than a foot off the ground scares the crap out of me.
Closed in spaces....obviously that is self-explanatory.
I have a few other phobias but they are just not appropriate to state on these boards. And besides you might think I am insane and I don't want that to happen yet.

I have a real fear of financial ruin. I am a bill collector and have been in the industry since I was about 8 years old when my mom started working for the company I am now working for. The pay is great, awesome benefits as well... Money management is just something that has come natural to me, but with an understanding that there are things beyond my control that can cause HORRIBLE problems. It frankly scares the crap out of me.

I think the only thing that ever scares me is when other people do something that isn't safe. I nearly freaked out when a co-worker stood on a chair with wheels to reach a high shelf, instead of using the stepladder. And the next time a co-worker leaves a dirty knife IN the dishwashing sink, instead of leaving it where it's easily visible, I'm going to hurt someone. Things like that scare me, as well as unsafe things outside of work, like reckless drivers. Probably the thing that scares me the most, is drunk people near campfires.

Enclosed spaces. I mean, even thinkin about em shortens my breath. That scene, in Aliens, when Bishop is getting into that small crawlspace? Can't watch it. I think it's something to do with not being able to turn around- not having freedom of movement.
Bugs creep me all the hell out. I'm not scared of em, they just look so.... well, buggy.
People scare me, but not in a phobia way.

I'm only real fear is something happening to my kids, but that is rather normal. I love deep water, I lived in the florida keys and while the reefs are nice. My favorite diving was in the deep ocean, go down till the sun is just a pale space above you. Floating in the void, no sound, no movement just me and the water.

I am very afraid of short heights. I have hung by one hand 50 feet off the stage in a theater painting a wall completely fine. Hot air balloon ride, loved it. Air planes, I’d sit on the wing if they let me (I actually want to ride in a glass bottomed plane). Put me on a 6 foot step ladder and I am white knuckled and shakey.
I suffer from fearapostaphobia. (fear of posting my fears on the net)

Let's see....
1. Tarantulas, or spiders just as big and nasty
2. Being in the middle of the ocean, in the water (I even get freaked out when I'm in water in EQ. Thanks a lot Open Water :? )
3. My medical condition resurfacing after three years of medical treatment. Nothing was scarier than having than that freaky deja vu feeling, then suddenly five minutes have gone by, and I had no idea what had happened, with my body shaking as if I were cold.
4. As of about a week ago, I now officially fear/hate the sun. After deciding to stay in the pool for around three hours, I discovered that the sun can give second-degree burns :x . The pain was unpleasant to say the least, and the peeling was incredibly annoying. Oh well, at least it was just my back, or else my nasty peeling arms would have been quite the ugly sight :) .
I used to fear clowns and the Mickey Mouse-esque dressed up people (they've got permament smiles and giant heads! Who in their right mind WOULDN'T be afraid of them?) when I was a kid, but that's long gone.

You should try swimming in and around a half-submerged shipwreck, where, due to the steepness of the slope it is on, the front 1/4 of the ship sticks up into the air at a 60 degree angle, and the rest disappears into the deep.... and you swim into the open hold doors, and it is dark inside, and you cannot see anything around you.... you remember that the ship wrecked in a storm and several crewmen died.... and something brushes against your leg....
I am living proof that, with proper motivation, a human does not have to have Shao Linn monk training nor possess divine blood to either A) levitate, nor B) walk on water

I see many people are afraid of deep water here. That is interesting, because many people I know are "afraid" (or dislike) the exact opposite. Having to wade through seaweed and step on who knows what, is for many people just as huge fear as deep water is for others.
Personally, I find deep water fascinating. I really like swimming far out on the ocean, just looking down into the water and see the sunrays disappear into the dark nothingless under me. Peaceful, in a sort of way. This can, of course, be because there are really no people-eating sharks or deadly jellyfish in Norway. :-)
Ah, that's it. I really, really dislike jellyfish! I have gotten burned on them many times. Damn things.
For me, I think failing is the biggest fear. Failing to do anything I want to do properly, especially work. I fear failing myself, I fear failing to be good at anything. This, to me, is a much bigger fear than dying, growing old or falling from great heights.

Swimming in any body of water where I can't see the bottom. will. not. do. it.
I should clarify. I meant I dislike swimming in any body of water that has thick sentiment (i.e. rivers, ponds) or the water is very dark. I alos can't swim in the ocean anymore. I'm always stepping in holes that range from an inch or so deep to a foot and it scares the bejesus out of me.
I also won't swim in any body of water that has mud for the bottom. I can't stand that.
