I’m a sucker for super hero movies and for teenage life movies. Sky High mixes both of these Disney style.
Sky High takes place on a world where the sons of famous super heroes all study on the same secret floating High School, Sky High. The story is focused on Will Stronghold, the son of the biggest two heroes in the world; who has developed no powers at all. At Sky High, students are divided into two different groups, and given different courses accordingly: Hero for kids with amazing powers and Sidekicks for kids with no or practically useless powers, the later being where the son of the greatest heroes in the world lands on. Needless be told, teenagers be teenagers and the strong “hero” group usually acts as the stereotypical football/cheerleader kids who on movies tend to bully the weak, in this case, the sidekicks. As if facing the super bullies was not enough, Will also has to deal with Warren Piece, the son of a criminal his own father put in jail, which did develop his very powerful fire blasting powers.
The movie is all full of predictable turns of events, but all of them done on a fun fashion. There does is one interesting turn of events near the resolution of the movie that I was not expecting at all, thing that on it’s own made me consider the movie above average.
Although not heavily advertised (at least as far as I seen), this movie has two very notable actors that make the whole thing more interesting, first Kurt Russell as The Commander (practically superman without fly) and the always amazing Lynda Carter (of Wonder Woman fame) as the principal of the high school.
This movie wont be winning any Oscars or breaking any ticket records, but for any super hero fan it is a must see. If you have kids also you should take them to see it, as it is not only fun but also have some nice moral lessons.
The good:
Super hero vs. super villain action!!!
Amazing super powers!
Lynda Carter!!!
The Bad:
Predictable
Some special effects at the giant robot fight may seem a bit weak
My personal score for this film:
7.5/10
