I bought this one because I love the Old West. It is not a bad game, but it isn't what I expected.
First, I thought I could run around doing as I pleased and make my own story. Nope. This game is on rails. The only freedom you have is whether to do the side quests. And you pretty much need to do the side quests, so there isn't a lot of leeway.
Whoever designed the controls for the horse needs to be flogged.
The dialogue is very funny and the storyline is interesting, so kudos for that.
The shootouts are cool, especially the quickdraw feature which puts you in bullet time briefly.
It is rated "M", and hearing the people cuss is a hoot. I am not used to that in videogames but it seems appropriate to the Old West. Of course, they can't compete with me when I am trying to control the horse. :?
Anyone else play this one?

I am about half-way through this.
The on rails is quite accurate. I was hoping for more roaming through out.
I will say though that I liked the casting they did for the voices.

I didn't really like it. They advertised it as some huge Grand Theft Auto-esque western shooter, and I thought that was awesome because cowboys rule.
But it's an on-rails shooter. Some of the missions are kinda odd, and hard to NOT fail. (the mission in the beginning where you throw the barrels off the brdige.) I had to turn it down from hard to normal :(
I returned it without playing much farther, because I just wasn't very interested in it.
I give it 4 out of 10 stars.

I personally loved it, slightly disappointed in the short time it took to beat. The shootouts are alot of fun, and I love the old western movies and such. I am now trying to beat it on "insane" mode, which is extremely hard heh.

Ok this is my review on the game:
In one sentence? This IS a short Grand Theft Auto in the old west.
The game has a main plot (just as GTA has) that will lead you from contact to contact where you will do missions for them and slowly progress on a storyline. There are also side contacts that will give you specialized side quests, some more elaborate than others.
Unlike GTA, the action is much more close up. By this I mean, in GTA, the character is rather small on the screen, while on this game, you are closer to a more detailed character. The difference is hard to explain, but the player perspective feels more like Metal Gear than GTA.
Horse Riding, for me, was a bliss. I still turn on the game long after finishing it, just to run around in a horse.
Quick draw feature was very nice, but I never got to use it too much since I found the rifles be closer to my play style.
The story is superbly voice acted, and although filled with predictable plot twists, I enjoyed it from start to finish.
Now, on the bad side, the game is just too short. You may think the side contacts would fill in to longetivize the game, but unfortunately there are about just 2 side contacts, plus the Pony Express one (that only gives you very short intra city deliveries, never any true travel with ambushes ones). There are also the Wanted posters, which also had very few jobs available.
This game would greatly benefit from an expanded Wanted list, more and actually dangerous (not just short time limited) Pony Express missions, and off course, more contacts with one-shot jobs, not only good ones but also bad ones (be the good guy and stop crime but also a few where you are the bank robber would had been nice)
I hope that last paragraph to be filled in by the mod community eventually, though (at least for the PC version that was the one I got)

I absolutely loved this game, while it was far to linear I feel that the horse controls were perfect, aiming is a breeze, and the firepower aspect of the game is wonderful. The only annoying thing for me is that you HAVE to finish all the side missions before beating the game to get the twin cool unlockables.
[spoiler:d5cab28a86]Invincible Horse, and Shotgun cannon[/spoiler:d5cab28a86]
Because if you finish them afterwards...there is literally NOTHING to do. There are no more Indians...no more bank robbers....no more soldiers...All you have left is an occasional 1 or 2 bandits who ambush you...and by the time you have completed everything they are so easy as to be laughable. I felt that the storyline missions in the game were well put together and interesting but often times the side missions were redundant and the only reason I completed the Pony Express missions was to get the unlockable. See above.
Altogether a 9/10

considering this is the first game from neversoft that ISNT Tony Hawk, i am suprised and happy with the results.
sure its short, but this is a 1st step for them. yes i know, its not their first day in the gaming world, but in the action world it pretty much is.

Hm ive just finished playing it extensively, here's my quick-as-possible summary
The guns and shooting is nice, its very "lets shoot these guys and drink some whiskey" different weapons for different situations were included, but you really only needed your pistol and your rifle, and if you felt like messing around, the dynamite bow and arrow. I was disappointed by the lack of weaponry to choose from, im pretty sure there were more than four pistols in the wild west, and i dont understand how duel wielded revolvers reload faster than a regular revolver, the physics behind it are mystifying, a larger choice of guns, and better use for them would have been great
The story was actually very good, albeit REALLY short, and on the hard difficulty, at certain points, impossible. i cant get past that mine near the end, i get inside all right but then they just keep coming and coming and coming.
the horses werent bad, they were probably your only choice of transport unless you like walking in a nearly empty world, though i don't see any way around the barrenness of the world, after all it is the wild west.
Music would have been nice too, though i have one question: Is the voice actor for Colt the same guy who voiced Frank Castle in The Punisher? his voice resembles it.

ill admit it was addictive for a little while but after you get the main part of the story its just...blah, nothing to do.
oh well, for a company's first action type game it was pretty good, just the whole barren thing doesnt work in action games like it does in skating, what were the THPS, THUG and THAW games other than a bare city with music playing and places to find to trick off of?

lemme get this traight. GTA main feature was how open it was. You could do missions but didnt have to. You could just go aroudn stealing cars and killing stuff.
now can you do this or not?

dude, this isnt Rockstar, this isnt a even GTA clone, and unless you consider Grand Theft Horse an amazing spectacle, you wont find a game to like here, the main draw is the story and shooting, its the wild west, not the concrete jungle.
its like a spaghetti western in game form.
To put it simply: yes you can shoot whatever, but...there are only people inside of towns (aside from random attacks in the plains) and after you kill enough people a posse is sent out after you which is about 2x as strong as most enemies and has more people, so then you either kill them and start killing innocents again or get the hell out of town until says you ran, not really fun.
Things to do on the side are poker missions (which can get annoying when the last man standing is nickel and dimeing himself to death), hunting missions (Sneak in, get headshot with bow, if you fail sneaking, animal runs away, you have to find it again), Pony Express, (Riding like wild across the plains fighting off indians at the same time while trying to beat the clock, not too bad), Deputy and Marshall jobs (Killing outlaws while wearing a badge) and thats it. all of those with the exception of poker give you stats which you'll need in the main game anyhow.
Like i said, the story is the main draw.
