Enter a world, not unlike our own, where Magic is a disease and those who are cursed by the power of the magi are feared and controlled by law and tradition. It's the year 2032 and most of the "civilized" world has long ago forced mages into the roles of second class citizens. Unable to work high end, or powerful jobs... forced into seperate schools, moved into ghettos and slums, these people live a life filled with the knowledge that they're unwanted and untrusted, in a world that promotes "peace, unity, and togetherness."

But this world has been rocked to it's core. Two years ago, in 2030, the golden child of the City of Devils, New York, revealed to the United States, and the world, that he was an unregistered mage. With his empire toppled and broken up, his legacy lives on, and everyone waits with baited breath, wondering what's going to happen.

Now it's time for you to choose. Are you a mage, with the power of the elements at your fingertips, and yet, oppressed, fighting to keep from being broken? Or are you a human, with all of the non-mage population behind you, fighting to keep your place in the "natural" order of things?

RULES:

Note: This is not a free-form roleplay. Although it's free-form in the way that there is no stats and attributes, it's very much a structured game. There are general GM posts that the players respond and react to, along with other player's posts.

1. No Godmodding. I cannot tell you how much I hate this. That means no immortal characters, no impossible feats, and no auto-hits or kills. If you need further explanation, let me know.

2. Do not argue with the GameMaster. I. Am. God. 'Nuff said.

3. This is Player vs Player. Which means your character probably end up saying hateful things / doing mean hateful things to other characters... remember it is a game, and no hard feelings. If you can't seperate your character from yourself... you shouldn't be roleplaying in the first place.

4. There is a time limit. One week real life = one game day. I need to keep this strict, so I can set up the news posts.

5. I encourage out of board communication. If there is something that's private between you and another character, it would behoove you to IM, PM, Email or phone it to that other person. The less that everyone knows about what your character's doing, the better... except for me, of course.

6. Everything you do has an affect on the world around you. Just remember that.

7. Character profiles must be PMed to me through the site's PMs and approved before you can play.

8. There's no magical races here. You are either Human, or Mage (human with magic), no angels, no devils, no elves, nothing like that.

If you have questions, email/im/post them here. I'll be happy to elaborate.

CHARACTER PROFILE

Name:

Age:

Sex:

Pendant: To be explained at the end... remember, the more magic, the less freedom you start out with.

Pendants are used not only as identification, but as a focus for all the mage's magic spells to go through. All mages are taught to cast spells through their pendant, and without them, they're unable to even do the simplist of cantrips. There are rumors as to ways around this though.

Appearance:

Personality:

Special Abilities: What does your character do that's unique / special. In old AD&D terms... non-weapon and weapon profeciences... Computer hacking, shooting, targeting, etc. etc. etc.

Family / History: Not really needed but would give me something to work with when bringing the story together.

Other Useful Information:

Contact Information: MSN, AIM, E-mail, anyway for people to contact you if needed.

PENDANTS

All citizens of the United States (Canada and England and most other world superpowers as well... minus China) are tested for the Mage power three times in their adolecence. First time is around 8 years old, again at 12, and one last time at 16. No one knows exactly what the mage tests include, as everyone who takes it can't remember anything but going into the room with the MBI (Magic Bureau of Investigation) representives, and coming out later with their pendant. Pendants mark the strength of the mage, and all mages MUST wear their pendants in plain sight at all times. Failure to do so will result in punishment at the full extent of the law. Pendants do have a half step, and a diamond is added to the gemstone, which shows that the mage is not strong enough to go to the next level.

Amber: Totally without magic. Those humans that wear these are generally anti-mage, and am not afraid to show it. Most places named after this stone are reserved for only humans.

Amber With a Diamond: Still human. These pendants are worn by the mage supporters, and show people with a more tolerant outlook to the mages.

Jade - The lowest mage. Jades can do tiny cantrips with low duration.

Topaz

Amethyst

Opal

Ruby - MBI starts watching the mages from here on. Rubys, Emeralds, Sapphires, and Onyx are subject to harsher rules, worse penalties, and a lot of abuse by the non-mage population. With effort, a ruby can move a small car using it's power, but cannot sustain it in the air for any period of time.

Emerald

Sapphire

Onyx - The most powerful mage. Onyx with a Diamond is a mage rank, but there are VERY few of these left... as Jason Cartel disposed of many of those with this amount of power. An onyx can easily juggle a semi-truck in the air with their power... but can't go near amber without shattering it, unless they take precaution.

Players cannot be Onyx with a Diamond without special permission given by the GM.

I purposely only put a few guidelines in for the magic... just kind of wing it. But if you're a topaz, don't go thinking you're going to make yourself fly or anything. >.> It's possible that a small little cantrip could do more damage than an onyx powered spell... if used correctly.

Name: Harrison O'Reilly

Age: 20

Sex: Male, and with women (prefferably his own age, big age gaps bug him)

Pendant: Emerald

Appearance: 6'2", handsome, incredibly fit, trains every day to keep himself in peak physical condition. Wavy black hair down to just over his ears, piercing blue eyes, which have a habit of changing to black when he's really pissed off. If you see those black eyes, run. A "five o'clock shadow". Tribal tattoos over the back of his shoulders, the small of his back and running down his hips to places unknown...also, a tattoo of a protection symbol over his heart. No hair anyway below his neck...

Personality: A nice guy who has always tried to do what's right. He has a good sense of humour, but knows when enough is enough. He can follow orders like the model soldier, and lead just as well. Loves punk rock music, and can't stand techno, "It's not music, it's noise! Real music has soul, it has meaning, it's about something! Techno is just about the beat, it's designed for people to dance to.". Pretty opened minded, tries to get along with everybody, but hates anti-mages.

Special Abilities: Skilled in three deadly forms of Martial Arts: Taekwon-Do, Capoiera, and Ninjitsu. Lethal with a pair of sais, and still highly dangerous with most other weapons. A sure shot with a rifle, he has dedicated his life to becoming as dangerous to his enemies as possible, should he ever be caught in a situation where he cannot use magic. While he is a fairly powerful mage in all respects, fire and ice can be manipulated by him easier than anything else.

Family / History: His mother was an amber anti-mage, who was raped by an onyx. Harrison never really knew his parents, his mother never wanted him, and he was on the street at 9, raising himself. While his name is Irish, the only thing Gaelic (apologies if I spelt that wrong) about him is his ability to hold alcohol.

Other Useful Information: Uh...he's had a couple of serious girlfriends, and a lot of one-nighters...his mother once mentioned something about his twin sister, but she was drunk at the time. Still, he has always had the feeling in the back of his mind that maybe he does have one.

There's nothing really of note in the news today. Mayor White is pushing his anti-mage law through the leglistature today, and is going to be giving his arguments supporting this controversial law at the City of Devil's Town Meeting tonight at 6pm. The mayor had no comment when asked by our reporter if his personal discrimination against the Mage community helped foster and form this law.

The MBI is standing by on full alert, in order to quell any mage protests before they start.

In other news, the members of the newly formed City of Devil High School's Fencing team had a stunning victory over the Cascow Mages yesterday evening, winning four of their six matches. The Cascow mages have occasionally made it into one of the top three spots of the Fencing league for the past ten years, never dropping below slot 7 in any of those years. Next week the City of Devil High School will be traveling to Oakland and facing off against the New Oakland Bears Make sure you come out and support your local team. Good luck boys.

In the financial sector, the Dow Jones ended today at 12,003.34 points, closing at a gain of 53.42 points. This was attributed to the fast climbing Tysec Corporation stock, set off by the rumors that Tysec, once a long term rival with Cartel Corporation, has unearthed the secret of creating some of Cartel Corporation's most vauable items. What these items are or what the discovery will entail, we have no way of knowing.

Weather today will be sunny, with highs of 82 degrees and a low tonight of 63 degrees.

Marty didn't push you for an answer for the resto f the evening, assuming that since you didn't say no, you were going to agree to help the cause. As the night went on, you were treated to all the comforts that the Blue Rose had to offer; your glass was always full and you had all the female attention you could want.

At the end of the night, Marty gave you a slip of paper with a phone number, telling you to make sure to call and let them know if you're in. As he prepared to leave, he told you not to mention to anyone that he told you about the lady. If asked, he'll etll you that the lady dosen't like people kowning that she's directly involved in 'this.' From his words, it seemed like there was more going on than what he would tell you. With promises of fortune and threats on your well being if you told anyone about this, Marty left you in front of your apartment building, secure in the thought that he had done a good job bringing you to the cause.

Friday morning came and brought with it a slight hangover and the knowledge that every drink and bit of female atteion came free for you - bought by the promise of an answer and the hospitality of Marty's elusive employer. The scrap of paper on the nightstand serves to remind you that the employer is expecting an answer.

(OOC: The day is yours. Just give me an idea of what you're wanting to do for today and what plans you have.)

Branwen

You left the pizza parlor with thet hope of running into Carly again, but the mage was nowhere to be found. At home, your parents left a note for you, congratulating you for your team's win, and apologizing for not being there to cheer for you. The house was silent, your sister was already in bed and your parents were out at a party hosted by one of your father's most prominent business partners. They wouldn't be home for hours. The night was uneventful as you did your homework and fell asleep.

The morning passed as any other would. You woke up, got ready for school, ate breakfast where you spoke to your parents for a half hour. During which you gave them blow by blow of your match.

School, however, was a different story. Just like those other jocks that you used to watch, you came into your school a "hero." It seemed that the entire school knew the details of the meet, including your own (marginal) win against the mage-bitch.

You spent the night studying all the information that you could get on the Blue Rose club and its employees. Finally, near the break of dawn, you felt that you had enough information to justify going to the club. Knowing that the club opened at 6pm, you decided to go early, hoping to catch everyone there when they weren't too busy to talk.

At 5 o'clock sharp you appeared at the front door, and it took just a flash of the badge and a nice word to the bouncer to be let into the blue haven.

It looked much the same as it did the night before. Blue carpets and curtains and decor, a stage with the two dancing poles, and the bar. From out behind the bar, a nice looking, if older lady whom you identified as Rosaline, the owner of the bar and retired dancer, walked over to you. "May I help you?" She asked, her voice cool, not without the finest hint of anger.

Buzzcut held up a picture of Kasumi in his right hand, the same that he had wrapped the prayer beads around.

"Have you seen this individual here recently? I'm told that ( OOC: call me uninformed, name isn't helping me with gender!) s/he has a friend that s/he visits here from time to time."

"I have a few important questions to ask," he finished, fondling the beads with his left hand.

(OOC: LoL, Sorry hon.)

Rose looked at the picture for a moment and then stared up at you. You could tell that she was weighing her answer carefully before she answered. "You one of her monks?" Was all she said, her eyes heavily lidded.

Harrison awoke with his head throbbing. Powerful as he was, no man could withstand the after effects of a night on the drink.

Events of the previous night flashed back to him, and he remembered the pice of paper, and what he was supposed to do. The plan didn't sound that outrageous. He was in.

He picked up the phone and began to dial the number on the note.

Branwen threw his bag down on the bench and laughed quietly at the note his parents had left him. Being two of The Cities leading socialites had required a ruthless approach to partying and mingling.

They’d tried to bring him along, numerous times, introduce him into their world. But these attempts would usually turn bad. Ending with an enraged Arthur Stirling, taking away Branwen’s car for a month.
Setting him up with the Mayors Daughter was an interesting experience, to say the least.

Branwen fixed himself a drink and thought about Carly.
The way she moved, that feeling that she had loved it just as much as he.
Branwen liked em with a bit of sas, a bit of mystery. And he hoped her ‘stand offishness’ would leave once she called him.
That is, If she called him.

After checking his messages, (One from Josh) he trudged up the staircase, disapointed. Wynnia had slept with her door open from a young age. Branwen smiled as he looked around his sisters room.

Ponies and heartthrobs, spread around dark purple walls. However Branwens sister was quite different from some of the girls at her school.
Wynnia was the best marker in the City. Her aim was dead one. Her natural affliction for firearms are what made Wynnia his Fathers favorite. Yes, he had high hopes for his 'lil gunslinger’.
She'd hate the way he would fuss over her, and got along with Branwen quite a bit.

Branwen entered his room and finished an essay before falling asleep, fully clothed, on his bed.

The reception at school the next day was astounding. Branwen had witnessed what it was like to be treated differently, but couldn’t have imagined what it felt like, whilst happening to himself. People were blowing him kisses, one even pinching his ass. Other’s who he had never met, were crunching Branwens fist in a sort of familiar handshake. Even Mr Smiesly nodded hello, which was strange considering the mood that guy was always in.

First Period, English. He’d always dug Shakespere, and you could probably guess why.

OOC: It's short, again. If you want more, I can give it.

It seemed that even the teachers got into the spirit of the school's first win (in any sport) against the Mages. In honor of the fencing meet (which your teacher swore she was there to witness) the class revolved around Shakespere's many violent conflicts in his plays.

The class was filled with normally sleeping teenagers brandishing rulers and pencils as "swords" as they read the lines that the teacher assigned them. A couple of the real jokers changed the lines, some smart enough to still put their words in iambic pentameter as they began to slaughter Shakespere by shouting phrases such as "Die mage scum!" and "Death to mages!"

Of course this lead into the heated discussion of whether or not Shakespere was a mage, and if not, how'd he get as much knowledge of everything that he did.

All in all, it was an energetic and draining class.

Math class, period two, couldn't have been more different. The teacher, Mr. Denbrough, must have been about a hundred years old, and nothing would have gotten him up in the excited frenzy that lead the first class of the day. The cooldown period was good for you though, you were finally able to weasel out the reason why everyone was so damned... weird.

According to the guy who was sitting next to you, the reason why the CoD High was so excited about the meet the last night is that it was the first time that they've ever went against the Cascow mages. Until this fencing season, Mages and Humans have had seperate leagues, because of fear of riots and anti-mage feelings. But they were trying something new!

Third Period - P.E. was always fun, and today wasn't much of an exception. You were in the middle of the archery block of the class, two weeks of shooting bows at targets. It was child's play and normally you'd just enjoy and shoot, just like your father taught you when you were 8, but today there was just too much talk to fully relax like you wanted to. Too many people who wanted to hear a blow by blow account of each of the matches, too many girls coming up and giggling in knots and groups as you try to shoot, and too many guys coming up loudly to congratulate you and your friends, and to ask how it felt to finally beat those mages like they deserved.

All the attention was heady, and kind of... irritating and freaky in a way. Josh must have felt it too, because as you were leaving the locker room in order to head to lunch, he stepped beside you, obviously having something on his mind, "Hey, Bran. What do you say we take off, y'know, play hooky for the rest of the day? Just... get out of this place."

"Not a monk," he answered, "simply a scholar seeking out a master."

"Has she been around recently? Or, could you arrange for a meeting for me?" he asked, handing Rose a fresh business card that he had just received that morning.

Zarlune

Rose took the business card and looked at it. (If you want, you can send me a PM of what's on the card that's important.)

"I haven't seen her around lately. Then again, I never had much to do with her, too uptight for my tastes. My girl Lilac used to spend time with her. They were roommates or something to that effect. Tell you what. Sit down, have a drink, and I'll go get Lilac. We've still a few minutes till opening time, and she's not opening tonight, so you have plenty of time to talk."
