I went and saw this film last weekend. After seeing it, I knew I had to post this review so as to warn people away.
The movie is slow. The plot has a bad habit of rolling along, and there are some scenes where nothing ever really happens. The plot seemed to be pretty weak as well. Basically, it just tells the life of Nicolas Cage's character, something Spritz (can't remember the first name) and how he attempts to deal with both his divorced wife and his two children's supposed problems resulting from the breakup (though both seemed pretty normal to me). Some aspects of teh movie go unexplained or unconfronted, such as the daughter's smoking habit (at age 12). Also, there is a literal bucketful of cursing; f**k is probably said around 30 to 50 times in the movie, over half which will be Spritz, since the character is generally a jerk.
Which brings me to the next point: the characters. Nicolas Cage's character, despite expressing his wishes to patch things up with his ex-wife and even try to get back together with her, pisses off both her and her boyfriend at every turn, more often than not cursing to her face as soon as they so much as slightly argue. When people recognize him on the street from the news and ask for an autograph, does he giev them one? No, he merely tells them to f**k off, and they leave pissed. With this guy acting like such an ass throughout the movie, it's pretty hard to feel any sympathy for his situation.
Apart from Michael Caine's role, the rest of the characters do no more than fill the jobs they were given. None of them give a very powerful performance, and the children, especially the girl, do no more than spout lines, making it hard to connect with the other characters.
There is one high point I must give attention to, however. My avatar, none other than the Super Big Gulp itself, is at one point given a toss by a passing driver at Spritz, nailing him and soaking him. Not only was I pleased that my favorite beverage had made an appearance, it was also used to assault the main character of a movie so lame I could have slept through it. In a sense, I suppose, it truly was my avatar =)
All in all, I give this movie a 4.5/10, and 1.5 of that is for the SBG's cameo role (and a -.5 sicne the characters got it's name wrong =P)
