This is actually 3 books in one plus two short stories all dealing with an Inquisitor of the Ordo Xenos in the Warhammer 40K series.

I'll be honest, it's these books that first got me interested in the warhammer 40K universe. Here you get to see how the universe works behind the scenes. It's not all space marine's and bolter pistols. There's a fair amount of intrigue going on, especially within the various Ordos of the Inquisition. It's still a brutal and unforgiving place but you get to see a side of it that dosen't come out on the battle field of most books.

The characters are all fascinating and have some fairly interesting archs in their growth. Esienhorns being one of the most fascinating to me as he goes from an inventive puritan solider of light, to haveing a more flexable view of how to fight evil. This series also holds a special place in my heart because of one of it's villains. A powerful creature that haunts our hero for much of his life.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a good space detective story with a little epic adventure thrown in for good measure.
