I don't think those were funky space aliens.. looked more like Beholders, if I have the name correct.

Beholders: the most annoying thing I've ever encountered in D&D(tabletop that is). They hit very, very fast and you hope your save vs. death is high enough.
Only thing worse than one or two beholders is five or six garuths.
