Star Wars Republic Commando: Triple Zero
If your looking for a good ‘Star Wars’ book where the focus is not on the Jedi, do I have a tale for you. This story follows two groups of republic commandos (The navy Seal variety of the regular troopers), a group of Null ARC troopers and the Mandolorian sergeant who trained them as they tack a terrorist cell in the heart of the Old Republic, Coruscant. The Jedi are represented by two competent but not extraordinary Knights who might be just a wee bit to attached to their cloned infantry.
In a lot of ways you could look at this as ‘Rainbow Six: Star Wars’ edition. Though to be fair I enjoyed this book far more than any in the Rainbow six series. Especially as the two Commando units Omega & Delta squad are composed of very unique and in their own ways, interesting characters. The Nulls are essentially less stable and far scarier versions of your normal ARC trooper so that tells you everything you need know about them. Their Sergeant’s name is Kal and he’s Mando through and through and desperate to teach his ‘lads’ something of the culture that spawned them as well as give them a future. It is made abundantly clear that he is not in this for the republic, the Jedi or any high ideals; he just wants to protect his boys. The two Jedi are interesting, as they do care about their troops and seem honestly worried about the morality of using cloned soldiers, humans, as throw away war pieces.
The tracking of the terrorist cell is interesting, but the real fun of the story is how this impromptu family deals with each other and the world around them. To say these boys are awkward as they try to fit into civilian life is like saying Anakin Skywalker had some slight anger problems. They are lost in how to deal with anything outside military life but a few of them do try with interesting and unexpected results.
All in all a fun read that if should not disappoint. And it has a glossary in the back that gives you some words in Mandolorian in case you wanted to learn how to curse some one out or impress your friends.
