Ok, I don't have LoY, so during the summer, i bought EverQuest Atlas: the Maps of Myrist It's a very handy little book, but tonight after i got my Shaman to 34, and was on my way to get my new spells and such, I found myself in West Karana, and very lost... i was looking at the map in my book, and realized that the book (which IS an Officially Liscenced SOE product) had the Zone lines for NorthKarana and Qeynos Hills reversed on the map.. ^_^ I told the people who were in the gu comics serverwide chat channel... and i thought i should post this information here.
Woody, I hope this is in the right Forums, if it isn't then please let me know

No offense.. but most people I've met that own it, seem to think it's a vast waste of money, especially with places like EQ Atlas (http://www.eqatlas.com). They also have nice download packs of maps if you ever get Ykesha.
It is pretty stupid that an official product has a mistake like that, but editing mistakes happen.

No offense, but I liked the book. Nothing wrong with the atlas, some of us don't like having to flip through websites looking for a map. And since I don't have a printer that works, that's out too. =P
The book served me well and was worth what I spent on it. Never noticed that error, but I know WK pretty well. =) Doesn't surprise me too much though, SOE is far from perfect.
Plus, it's just a neat little thing to have. *shrug* It's got some background info in it that's nice for reading.

I really don't have the time to go switching b/w EQ and Internet explorer, due to only getting 4 hours of EQ at a time :P which is stinky

Well, it's not my opinion. It's just from everyone (until now) about the book, and the Amazon.com reviews I read at the time. Isn't the Atlas the same price as Ykesha, anyway?

I can't get Ykesha on cd-rom, so i'm not getting it... I don't pay for my EQ and my dad doesn't want to have to pay twice for a LoY download if something bad happens to my computer

.. I may not understand this too well, as I often don't understand things; but once the expansions are credited to your account, if everything is deleted you just install and patch and everything's good. I'm pretty sure it works that way because after I got Ykesha I formatted my hard drive and re-installed EQ.
And I think they do actually sell it on CD-ROM now, on their store. Let me look around..
[edit]
Looked around. They had a limited CD release, but it has been discontinued and no retailers have it anymore. And this (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3063395948&category=11047) is all I could find on eBay.

What also helps if you use the atlas for guidance is to make use you turn the book so the compass is facing north side up, many of the maps in the myrist book aren't all facing north side up.

Well, you could pick up Evolutions. It has Ykesha on it, and honestly, you'd be paying twenty five bucks for the CD on its own, whether or not it was JUST LoY or it and four other expansions.
It's what I did. It's just one CD key (I had hoped for seperate ones, because then, hey, I'd have a Christmas present for my good friend who lacks Velious), and activates all of the expansions EXCEPT LDoN.. so it's a cheaper method to get expansions that you need via Evolutions than by buying them singly.

John has a point.
Recently (in the past 2 weeks or so), SOE has changed the patcher to have no limit on the amount you can download.
What this means in layman terms:
You can download every expansion, regardless of whether or not you have purchased them...any time you want.
This is good, for all those people that have lost CDs. It is also "hack" proof, because regardless of whether or not you have the files, you can't use them (ie enter those zones) unless you have the CD-KEY activated.
Everyone I've personally talked to about it has usually the same thing to say, "It's a nice book of maps, but I wouldn't use them in-game unless I had no other choice."
I would think about getting Ykesha now that this has been made available. You will only have to pay for it once. Whether you get Evolutions or just Ykesha, that's up to you.

Well, if she lacks PoP, Velious, Kunark, or SoL, then she'd definately be better off getting two games for 25 bucks instead of two games for fifty bucks or so. I pre-ordered Ykesha, but something weird happened two months after I had paid off the pre-order, and my account was unflagged for Ykesha. So, Evolutions rolled out, and whammo. I got me Ykesha.

I had to do several system restores after I bought LoY and never had a problem with re-installing it, matter-of-fact I think it's easier than having the CD version *shrug*

That's quite a task hearing something from "everyone". How can you filter out all those thousands of opinions?
Sorry, but I think people go overboard when they throw out things like that -- "everyone thinks it's bad!" :-)

FYI - If you read Kaylen's original post, she stated that it was everyone she had spoken to about it. Basically, all she heard was bad things from people who owned it. The post you are quoting is in response to another post.

I know that way back when....When Kunark first came out. I got the Prima Guild to it for a present. I tell you that book was heavenly. Looking back on it, its total poo. But I know it helped me and any number of my friends starting EQ, understand the game. So if people are finding this book useful, Good!
I do agree though, LoY is fairly cheap and I have never had a problem with re-installing it. Even when I switched computers to a totally fresh comp. And the Maps can be amazingly great.

We got that book. It was terribly entertaining. The errors in it are hyterically funny and there are a LOT of errors in it. It shows Dreadlands as being a level 1-10 zone, it shows that there's a zone to Freeport from Kedge, and much, much more. It's been a good 6 months since I looked at it, so I don't remember all the stuff we laughed about.
As background information about the zones, it's wonderful. I enjoyed it simply for the EQ lore. But the maps, for me, are worthless.
And I thought everyone got the mapping feature now, not just Ykesha users. They don't?
Oh, and Gnomish, once your account is flagged for an expansion it doesn't matter if your entire hard drive has a melt down. When you re-install EQ, LoY will re-download. I had to do that here because I bought a new computer a couple of months ago and I just installed what I had on CD, then started the patcher and when I logged on LoY was there.

I considered buying Maps of Myrist purely for the lore and so I could have some form of memorabilia several years down the road to look at (aside from my black tradeskill binder). The atlas is very well put together. Like others said though, you can pretty much get everything else you need for free, especially with the ingame maps nowadays.

same here with LoY, but my spider-sense always tingles when i have to re-install, i keep logging in and waiting for Legacy to disappear, i just dont feel safe without a copy of my own, and for the life of me i cant find the list of files they released.
is it just me or is this thread coming off as majorly hostile, if the kid cant get the expansion then they cant get it and it is their thread
if i were you, id write to them, a nice letter might get you a free month of EQ

Not the case. When I reinstalled EQ on my new computer recently, I didn't have the LoY files when the patch started. It patched them in automatically.

I find almost all Strategy guides to be worthless. Especially for Online game which update there content. They fill those books with useless numbers and data with a few helpful things here and there. There not written by anyone who has played the game for more then a week. This is because they need to crank out those books before the game is released. So there filled with poor tips and hints, misspellings, and incorrect info. Then they charge you $10-20 for it all. These books are not worth it when better, updated, and well thought out strategies can be found on many web sites. I need to get that shirt that says "NO, I do not want a Strategy Guide" when I go to EB and buy a game.

I've found the FFXI strategy book to be useful actually =) It's not revolutionary, but it has descriptions of a good number of quests; a TON of charts on monsters, their levels, and how they sense things; Classes and missions; and tradeskill stuffs. It's slowly coming one of the most thumbed through guide books I have (Although my FF Tactics Advance gets a lot of love for the artwork).
Anyhow, the atlas isn't totally useless is all I have to say. The maps aren't all that bad really, and I used mine quite a bit before the Ykesha maps.

/agree Arishia. The renkei/skillchain charts (and the monster info) in the FFXI guide are very helpful. I think I can safely say that the EQ guides I do own and have read would only be useful to either a new player, or someone who wanted to read the game story/lore.

Back when I lived with my mother, her boyfriend (who got me into MMORPGs) bought the Prima (I think it was) book for DAoC when it first came out. That book really helped me get into the game and enjoy it more right from the beginning; it had some useful information I'd probably scoff at now (and is also likely heavily out of date).
So, they can be useful.

Yes, the mapping system has made getting the book redundant. As said before all the lore within the book is worth it, atleast to me it is. And yes, the errors are humorous at times. Timorous Deep has north as south and south as north.

I remember my buddy calling Sony and telling them they were a bunch of money whores.. i never laughed so hard in my entire life.
