So, I've just started reading this book, and just wow. I am a Catholic by choice (yes I converted legally) and I found the allure of this book too much to resist. A good friend of mine, Baptist, reccomended it to me.
Thus far, I find it to be immensely thought provoking. It was so well written, and laid out, that even those with no interest in factual works, would find it enjoyable. Thus far, I say, it is a must read for all.

This is particularly important since from what I've heard, it's apparently largely based on stuff that's been proven false.
:P
On a more serious note, for those who haven't been following the news - this is the book whose authors are sueing the author of The DaVinci Code.

It hasn't been proven false. More to the point is that it can't be proven either way. There are some things suggested by the gnostic gospels found in Nag Hammadi that would seem to support some of the theories laid down by HBHG, but there's nothing to prove it right AND nothing that proves it wrong.
My sister and I have been, over the past few months, doing some very serious research into the theory that Jesus was married to Mary Magdelene. It has been absolutely fascinating. HBHG is far from being the only book exploring the topic, and I've found some of the other authors to be better researched and easier to read. Still, HBHG is a very interesting book and some of the theories it puts forward are plausible and possible.

Alright. To be a bit more specific, my understanding is that at least one of the primary sources (someone who lived within the last couple of hundred years - can't remember the name off the top of my head) published some information which is now known to be bad, and which was later incorporated into this book.
As far as Jesus being married - you won't find any argument from me. In fact, it's a fairly common speculative belief amongst members of my faith. I'm just pointing out that this particular book appears to have issues with at least some of its facts.

actually, the authors state quite clearly in the introduction(s) that NOTHING in his book is "fact"...when it comes to bibilical times and events of importance, NOTHING is fact. It is all speculation based upon interpretations. To write about biblical era -Anything- is to use immense ammounts of speculation. However, they use educated and well researched speculation.

There was a program on History channel a few weeks ago about this book and the Divinchi (Sp?) code, the author said it was fiction but it was very interesting.

The DiVinci Code is most definitely fiction. There was an interesting program on CNN last night about Mary Magdelene, Mary mother of Jesus, and sacred feminism in Christianity. I'll have to see if they put it up anywhere on their web site.

Actually, it isn't fiction per-say. It is all based around actual research done by the authors, but it is a LOT of speculation. Some of it a bit shaky, but it is not totally inconceivable for a lot of what is in the book to be true or close to the truth. DiVinci code is fiction so far as I know, but as far as I am aware, Holy Blood and the Holy Grail is not.
(now farther into the book, and DAMN, that is just some creepy stuff...)

I understand that the author has a brand new book out called "The Jesus Papers" that claims that Christ survived the crucifixion.
