View Full Version : Cheesy character portrait...

I'm new, this is my first post, but I've been reading GU forums occasionally for quite some time, and of course I adore Woody's comics. Who doesn't? They're often the best laugh of the day. :D
Anyway, my whole family plays WoW (our basement looks like NASA with all the networked computers) and my husband has a Tauren Shaman that we both love dearly.
I've decided to do a portrait of him, and can't think of a group of people that might be more appreciative, and who probably won't think I'm nuts for anthropomorphizing a collection of polygons covered with bitmaps. The snapshot for the portrait was taken while he was running me through Razorfen Kraul. He spent the waiting time while I destroyed junk loot to make pack space /flexing and /flirting at me. I couldn't resist showing that part of his personality via his shaman avatar.
Anyway, here's the unfinished pencil drawing/portrait. (http://www.ebsqart.com/Art/6542/289087.jpg)
(You can see the development of this sketch here (http://www.dawnsartstudio.com/news.htm), but there are also several painted nudes on this page, and it may be NSFW.)
Thanks for looking, and I hope you enjoy it. :)

Holy crap, that's INCREDIBLE! Sorry, that's all the input I have atm, lol. Looking forward to getting home from work to peruse the rest of your studio ;)

Thanks guys!
(Ciarin...it took me a lifetime to produce *just that* and I'm old. I suspect you'll do a lot better.)
Now...should I do an oil painting of this? Or a drawing with inks, maybe watercolors, maybe prismacolor? oh, decisions. ~sigh~

Superb detailing on the work in question and a neat studio overall.

if you do oil, I fear you wold lose a lot of that nice detail. I'd go with ink.

Thanks, guys! :D A few things kept me from doing much, but here's the current progress, along with the thing that's been keeping me busy. (http://www.dawnsartstudio.com/news.htm)
(that link takes you right to the 'news' page of my site.. almost a blog, but not quite. I share info there, but there are no mechanisms for input from others yet. Also no advertising, no popups, no flashy banner thingies.. gotta love hosting your own web site. <3)

I love that picture, and your art style. I have a thing for water colors so I'd say go with them, or inking...hmm choices. Anyway, great work...makes me wish I had kept drawing throughout college. Oh well, income over hobbies right now

four freaking thousand.......ouch, that all I got to say, ouch.
good luck on the show hope you do well.
Dawn White

Tristate, you're probably right.. something like inks would probably be best for a work this small. I can get vivacity with colored pencils, but it takes an incredible amount of time and materials.
(OMG four freaking thousand! could be slightly less, actually. I'm only covering 1310 square inches with paint, and not all of these things are 1/4" squared. only about half of them. *heavy sigh* Plus, there's the area that isn't small shapes on the figure.. that takes off a couple hundred square inches right there. So it's probably less, but still definitely between 3k and 4k.)

Lol yea I've done a few paintings like that, were I've wondered where my sanity went, or if I had just turned into a masochist. Keep us posted I love to see how it turns out, and how you did in the show.

wham blam Thank you Mam!!
now that's gorgeous, very streamlined, great amount of "character" in your character.

05-17-2006, 12:31 PM
Gosh, thanks! :D I tried to incorporate some of my husband's facial expression into this, since it's his avatar...which he isn't using anymore, since I'm too busy to play, and he's gone back to DAoC. *sob*
I haven't done anything else on it. :( Been working ten to twelve hours a day on this thing (http://www.ebsqart.com/Art/6542/304108.jpg), since it MUST be done by June 1st, for a show. *sigh*

Wow, that's incredible, Dawn.
I love the colors! Will you post a picture of the finished product when it's done?
Dawn White

Almost finished. (http://www.ebsqart.com/Art/6542/310227.jpg)

nice progress pic there, not to sure if its a "happy" painting with the colors or a "sad" one with the womb looking like its shattering.
Dawn White

It's neither, wicca. It's a story... the story of humanity's place in the flow of time, and a statement about evolution. The piece is called 'Mitochondrial Eve', which is an outdated term used to describe the function of the mitochondria DNA in eukaryotic cells; since a sperm's mitochondria are destroyed almost at the instant of conception, the only mitochondria you carry in your cells is from your mother; since mitochondria are thought not to change from generation to generation (barring mutation), it's theoretically possible to trace your genetic development back to the theoretical 'first cell' that contained a nucleus. (this isn't possible in practice because cell structure has changed many times over the last few million years.) Anyway, this painting describes a vision I have.. 'Eve' is actually the nucleus of that glowy thingie on the left; the figure is Today's Woman, incubating in her womb a fairly faithful copy of that long-ago cell...which will, in turn, cause her to be mother to many new species, over the next few million years, thanks to the mechanism of particulate inheritance.
Anyway, she's finished (http://www.ebsqart.com/Art/6542/310607.jpg).
The picture is blurry, because my hands were shaking... this has been seven weeks of mostly 12-14 hour days, with a grand total of four days off, and a brand-new ulcer to show for it. This painting is going to a show on the 8th. I just hope the damned thing is dry.

great work there, glad that its done ( I'm sure not as gald as you are ;) ). I truely hope you do very well at the show.
I take from your comment about it being dry that the painting was done with oils? I personally prefer acrilics for that very reason.
And thank you for the explantion, nice to see another Parasite Eve fan. goes along way of explaining the use of soooooo many little triangels.
Again great job, cant wait til you show off your next work. Just get alittle rest ok? ;)

I absolutely LOVE the colors!

06-07-2006, 01:10 PM
Thanks, guys. :) spot-on about all the tiny little shapes, wicca.. they were necessary to tell the story effectively, even though I spent a lot of time cursing them.
Yesterday was all rest. My poor Sims got quite a workout. :D Today, I gotta make brochures and frame one of my show entries. Tomorrow, drop-off, Friday, daughter's graduation (in a city across the state) and the show is saturday and sunday. Should be fun... but I'm glad it's almost over. I want to be a computer potato for a while. (almost typed 'puter tater', but feared the Wrath of Woody. :P)

thanks! :D
Jurying was accomplished, and I made it in! :)
Bad news: No prize, no 'first place', nothing special, just a separation of 'ordinary art' and 'cool art'. I'm in the 'cool art' room, but that's it.
But hey.. it's a small town, and now I'm part of the ..um.. 'less ordinary' sector.

Thanks, guys! :D
I'm a rock star, now. Three women at the show were thrilled over this piece, and they 'got it'...the concept, etc. They gushed a lot, and made me feel all speshul. :P It was rather nice. The champagne wasn't bad, either. ;)
(there were only about 100 people at the reception, so I thrilled three percent of the population sample. Success.)

Er, I have a new piece.. finished in about 14 hours of brush-to-canvas time. Stretched over two days, it seemed ridiculously easy after all the time spent painting 'Eve'. I sorta like it, and want to share. :)
titled "I Got Connie's Cherry!" (http://www.ebsqart.com/Art/6542/313107.jpg) (it's safe for work, no worries. sexy, but not porn. no boobs.)

:: jaw drops:: My only question Dawn is... Does your brain go better with beer, white, or red wine? I can't even draw stick figures!
Dawn White
06-17-2006, 05:25 PM
White wine. You'll definitely want something less acidic to complement the taste. ;)
(don't feel bad, Soria... I failed general math three years in a row. to each her own.)
