The thread on Evangelion made me curious as to which anime you guys like.
I just bought a copy of the Yami no Matsuei (Descendants of Darkness) series after watching the first episode on YouTube. The animation in this thing is just beautiful. And the boys are quite pretty. *grin*
I'm also planning on getting the Wolf's Rain series. I think this anime probably ranks as having my absolute favorite opening theme of any I've ever heard. It's gorgeous.
I've already got Fushigi Yuugi, Yu Yu Hakusho, parts of Ruroni Kenshin and all of Gundam Wing (shut up). I'd love to get Inuyasha, but my god I'd have to take out a second mortgage with all the episodes that series has. I'm hoping to get Gravitation for my birthday. I really want to get the first OVA for Yoroiden Samurai Troopers (Ronin Warriors), but that's taking a bit more scouting than casual surfing on eBay because most of the eBay sellers want to bundle it with the series, and I don't want the whole series. Oh, and I had someone recommend Fruits Basket as well, and it sounds really cute.
So what do you like, and why? I'm always up for new anime obsessions!

Gundam Wing (shut up)
You know, those guys always struck me as three-dollar-bill gay.
I have, and know of, a few things that you won't see very often, or really want to, for that matter. Went through an odd anime stage in college.

*snerk* Yeah, that's probably why there are more girls into GW than guys. The guys all tend to prefer the other Gundam series, and turn up their noses at GW.
And what kind of odd anime?

I have a DVD called Bastard at home. Really strange. Everything in it is some sort of heavy metal reference, but the name is what caught me.
Then there's Uroskidoji. Don't have this one myself, but I have seen it. The sub-title on it is "Legend of the Demon Womb", or Curse of, I'm not sure. That one's more hentai horror than anything.
The other one is called Kekko Kamen. It's an adventurish type of thing, where the heroine wears a mask...and nothing else. No sex, just boobs, boobs, and more boobs.

Heh, I have Bastard as well, it's so refreshing to see a wizard that acts more like an oversexed randy god, than the usual stuck up snobs I normally run into in fantasy stories.
Anyhoo, my current favorite anime is the Full Metal Panic series. It's got action, comedy and giant robots kicking rear.

The original Record of Lodoss War(not the Chronicles of the Heroic Knight or whatever the second lame series was), and Princess Mononoke.

Two words. Cowboy. Bebop.
Hands down, the best. Spike is my own personal god, and it's one of the (very, very) few things I get all "fanboi" over. I even shelled out to get the imported collectors edition soundtrack.
Man, that was a great show...

*grin* Having seen a picture of Dark Schneider, I think I need to get ahold of a copy of Bastard. Will go check into Cowboy Bebop now.

Yes, I highly recommend Escaflowne. Be aware that the movie is totally different from the TV series, and has little in common besides giant mecha and characters with familiar names. That's not to say you shouldn't watch it. Just don't expect anything related to the TV series.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - The series has some uneven episodes, but overall it's pretty good. The second series (Second Gig) is currently being released in the US, and shortly a third series will start airing in Japan.
Vandread - The experiences of Hibiki and two other citizens of the all male planet of Tarak when they are captured by an alien species - namely, a crew of pirates from the all female planet of Mejale. Lots of space mecha action, innocent yet semi-inappropriate actions (zero nudity or panty shots, however), and lots and lots of humor. Just make sure you watch the episode 'Wonderful World' subbed and not dubbed. It features the Louis Armstrong song of the same name - but only on the sub (the dub has a different song, presumeably due to the expense of licensing the song for the dub).

Inuyasha *runs and hides* that's anime right? or am I thinking of Japanamation?

Inuyasha is indeed anime. I'd love to own the series, but at 167 episodes plus 4 movies, I'd have to get a second mortgage to accomplish it. :(
And this is the first time I've heard of Vandread. That sounds pretty interesting. I'll have to go check into it.

Same thing.
'Anime' is the Japanese word for animation/cartoons.

Don't hold me to this, but people in the US should be able to get a fair amount of the episodes and movies via Netflix, if all you're interested in is watching em to watch em. If you wanna own em, then yes, you do need a second, and possibly third mortgage.

Inu Yasha wouldn't be as bad to get if Viz would bother putting more than 3 episodes per disc. That one, I wait until they put out the season collection in order to save some money (because I have tons of other anime to buy). And Ms. Takahashi is certainly no stranger to writing long series, Inu Yasha is, I believe, the shortest of her four long series (Maison Ikkoku, Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura are the other three, Urusei Yatsura being the longest.)
I sometimes update my sig with the list of shows I'm currently watching that are airing in Japan, as I remember to. Both my DVD and Fansub collections are massive (Urusei Yatsura alone totals 62 discs), so it's really tough for me to single out favorites. But I'll list a few of them anyway, in no particular order.
Urusei Yatsura
The Slayers
Full Metal Alchemist
Last Exile
Azumanga Daioh
Record of Lodoss War

Appleseed, Princess Mononoke, and the original Record of the Lodoss Wars series have been mentioned.

Escaflowne (the series) and Cowboy Bebop are my favorites. Evangelion and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex are in my Netflix queue, so we'll see how that goes.
Gundam Wing, Outlaw Star, and Trigun are also high on my list. Gundam Wing was designed to appeal to girls, by-the-by, so there is plenty of merit to that notion.
The ones that are more sitcom-esque (the possibility of endless episodes, usually a comedy) that I enjoy are Ranma 1/2 and Love Hina. I have absolutely no idea why I enjoy Love Hina, but I do. Detective Conan is also great.
I don't watch much hentai. I've only really seen Cool Devices, the rest have been movies. Dragon Pink is pretty funny, from the two or so episodes I saw of it. La Blue Girl is another comedic one. I had a tape of Maze before DVD hit it big, which included giant robots. I haven't really seen one worth much remembrance, or purchasing.
As for the made-for-kids shows, Monster Rancher and Card Captor Sakura would be my picks. I haven't seen a lot of Flint the Time Detective, but I enjoyed what I saw.
Anime runs the gamut, and I consider it unfortunate that people think it's its own thing; because it can include anything from porn to a typical Saturday morning cartoon.
Oh, don't watch Kite. Ever. The description made me think it'd be like Leon: The Professional, but it had a considerable amount of graphic, underage **** that was never mentioned at all in the damn description. If you can find the Americanized, censored version it probably wouldn't have that (unfortunately I couldn't find this version), but there's not much of a plot regardless. If you love your sanity, do not watch this.
