Well I just bought and beat this game within about Ten hours or so. All in all I found this to be a short but enjoyable game.
The game is based off a character from a comic by 2000 AD, the people responsible for Judge Dredd, this should give you an idea about the size and sound of most of the guns in the game. In this game you are the titular, Rogue Trooper, the lone survivor of Genetic Infantry men. The GI’s were created by the southers to thrive on the battlefield of Nu-Earth, a once green planet that has been turned into a poisonous hell by years of warfare. It’s so bad that normal humans must wear full body chem suits to move around on the surface. GI’s however can easily breath the fumes, and heal minor injuries.
The enemies of the Southers are the Norts who manage to wipe out nearly all the GI’s during their first operation. Of course, they accomplished this by setting up an ambush with information given to them by a traitor in the souther ranks.
All GI’s come with a biochip that will allow their minds to be transferred to another body if they should die. Since the biochips will only last sixty seconds on their own, the GI’s equipment has slots that can hold the chips of their fallen comrades until a new body is grown. During his first op, three of Rogue’s squad mates were killed and Rogue was able to equip their biochips into his Gun, Backpack, & Helmet. This is where the fun begins. Each of the personalities lends Rogue’s equipment new abilities. Gunner, who was placed in your rifle, allows you to use a silencer, equip a sniper scope, target a southers head or their vulnerable breathing apparatus and to set the rifle down on a tripod and use it as a sentry gun. This is great for distractions or covering one area while you do something elsewhere. Of course while he’s doing that you only have the use of your pistol but it is still a very useful ability. Bagman, runs your bag which works like a mini military depot and RnD facility. By collecting salvage from fallen enemies bagman can convert it to ammunition, med packs, and more. He also drops micro mines either to cover your rear or in a cluster to make an impromptu minefield and creates new toys for you when he get’s the blue prints. Of course if you run out of salvage you’re screwed but I never ran into that problem. Finally there is Helm, he allows for you to hack doors, expands the radar you use to detect enemies, can trick southers into traps you set up, and project a holographic image of you that will get guards to start looking, and shooting, away from you. The above abilities allow for some pretty creative uses, that plus the ability to take cover when near most walls give the Rogue Trooper a significant advantage over his enemies.
Now as for the story, it’s serviceable, it’s nothing extraordinary but neither will it bore you to tears. The voice acting is a real strong point as the disembodied voices of your comrades give out advice, talk to you and each other, and comment on your actions throughout the game.
The game is not that difficult as long as you don’t try to act like superman, you are tough, not invincible; keeping that in mind should allow you to proceed through this game with little trouble. The enemy AI is smart enough to take cover but all too often they try to rush you or peek parts of their body out and that generally leads them to a bullet related death.
I love this kind of game so for me it was a buy, especially as the makers really brought this new universe to life. However, most others should probably rent this, especially as its pretty short.
