Star Wars Legacy of the force: Betrayal

This book kicks off a new series in the expanded universe. In this story we see the mounting problems the Galactic Federation is having after the Vong war. Some systems want independence from the Federation and are positioning themselves to take it. Not surprisingly this splits the Skywalker and Solo families as Han is in favor those planets wishing to move towards independence doing so, (After the last war he really doesn’t trust intergalactic governments) while Luke and the Jedi are duty bound to aid the GF, at least for now.

To complicate matters, we have Luke seeing vision of a Dark man who dose not yet exist and someone is sabotaging the GF’s attempts at peaceful negotiations.

As fascinating as all this is, the high point of the story for me was seeing Luke’s son, Ben skywalker, in action. Ben shows a lot of aptitude and cleverness for a 13 year old boy, and so far he has resisted some of the more questionable teachings of his master, Jacen. Here’s hoping he lives up to the name he was given.

I came away intrigued by the direction this tale is taking and will continue reading this series for the foreseeable future. If you are a fan of the expanded universe I’d suggest you take a look.

Now a quick warning to any Jacen Solo fans, he did some things in this book that made me want to hoist him up by his ankles and shake the stupid out of him, so be aware.

Thieves of Blood: Blade of the flame book 1

Okay this is a novel set in Eberron, a campaign setting I have mixed feelings about. This was not helped when I read another Eberron book by the series creator that left me unimpressed. However, after reading this book, I have hope that some talented authors might just be able to wrangle a few good tales from this setting.

This story follows a priest of the Silver Flame, Diran, and his half-orc companion as they travel the world seeking to rid it of evil. Their journey leads them to Diran’s old stomping grounds and an encounter with an old lover and a group of, literally, blood thirsty pirates who are capturing people and not booty.

I like tales of redemption and people over coming a dark past. So since Diran is a former assassin turned priest this tale was right up my alley. Overall it was a good read with some clever encounters and some interesting interactions amongst the people involved. If your looking for an entertaining fantasy read I say give this one a try.
