This movie was a victim. A victim of an almost non-existant marketing plan and an inconspicuous release. It only made 15 million during its theatrical run... not good for something that Ridley Scott was involved in (and has been trying to adapt for the big screen since the 70s).

That being said, I thought it was a great movie all around, and I highly reccommend renting it if you haven't. Yes, it is a love story... and old fashioned love story without endless references to sex (like most "love stories" these days). It is also a historical epic (although the history is somewhat shaky). There are battle scenes galore, though on a smaller scale than say "Braveheart". It is well acted and touching.

If you are a fan of epics, period films, anything associated with the Dark Ages, or a love story with class, then go rent this movie! Way underrated.

I remember all kinds of previews for this, at least where I live. And while I consider myself a 'sappy girly-girl' and something of a romantic, I thought this movie looked far too cliche for my taste.

Twist my arm, though... might be worth a rental ;)

Well, I guess you could use the word "cliche" since the story is hundreds of years old and has been told and retold. It's a good movie nonetheless in my opinion, and I am a big sap at heart, so I like that type of thing as long as it's interspersed with a little violence (sword fights and the like). ;)

I am assuming it is not an opera. Do they at least use some of Wagners score ?

No they don't, and I actually feel that it would not have been appropriate for the movie. Then again, my experience with Wagner doesn't go much beyond "Ride of the Valkyries" or "Kill the Wabbit" and whenever I hear that I think of Apocolypse Now or Looney Tunes. I fail at culture :(
