Yes I am behind the times. I saw this movie for the first time (in it's entirety) last night. First off, let me say I am not an anime fan. The only anime movie I have really enjoyed prior to this one was the original Record of Lodoss War (Japan's take on a Dungeons & Dragons themed movie basically).
Well, I loved Princess Mononoke. The themes and the story are what made it so great in my opinion, with the animation being only secondary. Without spoiling it for anyone out there who hasn't seen it... I'll just say I liked how many historical stereotypes were turned upside down, and how there wasn't really a "bad guy" in the movie. Everyone and everything had motivations and valid reasons for actions, which they felt in their own minds were "right" (much like in the real world). Possibly the only villains of the movie was a clan of samurai (who weren't all that important to the plot anyway).
Anyway, it was a beautiful and sometimes touching movie. Highly reccommended!
