PostSecret: Extraordinary Confessions from Ordinary Lives
by Frank Warren
This is a rather interesting coffee table book. It's a hardcover book that kinda falls into a unique category. It's art and also a study of man. The author started by leaving postcards around the country asking people to send in a secret that they had never told anyone before. Since it's anonymous people shared all kinds of secrets and the artwork is rather creative. You have people cutting and pasting words and pictures out of magazines to actual sketches and drawings.
The secrets go from funny and mundane to deeply disturbing to ones that make you think. I wouldn't recommend keeping this book out where children can get to it. Some of it is adult only. Otherwise, for a group of mature adults with open minds it can be a conversation piece. Some of the art is amazing and the secrets can blow you away. Some can make you cry even.
Part of the proceeds from the sale of the book go to support the National Hopeline Network (1-800-SUICIDE), a twenty-four hour hotline for anyone thinking about suicide. Some of the secrets seem to be a cry for help.
I'll share a few that are G rated and not too disturbing:
"When I'm mad at my husband I put boogers in his soup"
"I ate all the blueberries (and they were delicious)"
"I don't care about recycling but I pretend I do"
"I think women who don't wear makeup are lazy"
"I used to fertilize a ring in our lawn every time I mowed it. It grew. My parents still think it was aliens."
You can see some more examples on the blog as well as there are instructions there to send in your own secret for the next book.
Here's the PostSecret blog (http://postsecret.blogspot.com/) and the book on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0060899190/102-6297157-2911339?v=glance%26n=283155%26s=books%26v=glance%2 6tagActionCode=harpercollinspub).
