I've recently given up on WoW and none of the current games out there are really peaking my interest so I find myself looking to the horizon for some glimmer of light. Anyone in the know have some suggestions of MMOs to look out for. I am open to almost anything as long as it isn't a total grind fest.

I'm waiting for Vanguard to come out. Our guild is already up and running with it, getting teams together for crafting/adventuring/diplomacy....to me that is the next big game that is going to be on the market.

Well...from what I understand you probably want to steer clear of Vanguard. I've heard rumors it's a total grind fest, but the NDA hasn't been lifted so I could be completely wrong. Warhammer Online, aka WAR, is also coming out about the same time Vanguard is coming out. There is also a handful of MMOs in development, but none coming all that quickly. I'll do some more research when I get home and see if I can get some more information.

Warhammer Online and Age of Conan are the two I'm looking forward too. Vanguard just seems like EQ2 again, bleh.

Vanguard (for that EQ1 magic), Warhammer Online (for better than DAOC PvP), Age of Conan (for not going soft on blood!), Gods and Heroes (for group combat under your control), Lord of the Rings (for being lotr!), DC (for hopefully being CoH without the grind).

All late this year or earlyish next year though.

I wouldn't expect any of these titles out this year. And you're really pushing it for them to be released Q1 next year. I am looking forward to Age of Conan though. The fact that there are so many archtypes is pretty fun, hopefully there isn't too much of a grind to it though.

I covered a couple of MMO's that are coming out next year that might have the potential to pull some subscribers from World of Warcraft. I am actually looking forward to Spore the most though its not really a MMO.

MMORPGs don't kill other MMORPGs; they only kill themselves, with either bad design decisions from the start (examples: Dark & Light, Shadowbane), or massive changes to gameplay (example: Star Wars Galaxies). Even WoW did not kill any other MMORPG; if you look at the numbers on MMOGchart.com, you'll see that WoW ended up with half the market by doubling the size of the market.

No MMORPG will ever be a "WoW killer", any more than any mp3 player will be an "iPod killer". Marketing a product as a killer against a competing product in either of these industries just shows that someone doesn't understand how the industry works at all. Since those marketing those products don't understand the market, the "killer" products inevitably fail to kill.

One of the MMO's in development ive been keeping an eye on is "The Chronicles of Spellborn." (http:\\www.tcos.com\). It focuses more on a small group (Max of 8) rather then large raiding parties, so for those who love raiding this game may not be for you. It shows promise of being a more unique MMO (as "unique" as an mmo can get) as well as being fun.

Most of the experience you will gain is gained through questing and the dev's have said many times that the Lore of the universe is very important to them.

There is no PVE raiding planned but there will be large sieges for control of areas call shards. Shards are basically pieces of the old world that got destroyed and are floating around in what is called the dreadspell storm.

Armor and Weapons themselves have no effect on stats in this game, as the developers wanted to make a "Dress to Impress" system where any one no matter of race or class can wear any type of armor and wield any type of weapon (ie you can be a mage in full plate with a huge 2h battle axe if you want). What effects stats however is "Sigils" which you can attach to armor and weapons to add visual effects and stat bosts.

Combat in this game is not the typical target the player and auto attack with using skils in between. There will be no targeting as the game works like an fps with manual tageting and all skills including basic attacks will need to be selected.

I am looking forward to the Stargate Worlds MMO (Linky in sig). Of course, it's so far from being finished there aren't even any screenshots yet. Nor is there much game play info. Mostly just a bunch of speculations. But I DO like Stargate, so I WILL be hopeful and giddy while waiting for it :p

Tabula Rasa, half-decent sci-fi MMOs are few and far between. With SWG, Darkspace and Planetside in the dumps, RF Online fustrated me, Anarchy Online is a tad aged, and Eve-Online of no interest to me whatsoever, I am hoping that Tabula Rasa turns out to be something decent.

PS: If not, I can always wait for Stargate Worlds, but I am usually not too enthusiastic about playing games based on existing IPs...
