Ok most of the folks here on this forum qualify as computer gaming experts. At least compared to me they do:).

I need some help here. Some quick back ground first. I have been playing online MMOs since right around 1991. I almost always play with various family members. I have played NWN1 (the SSI MMO released about 1991 not the new one), Darksun online, EQ, EQ2, SWG, AO, UO, L2, DDO, and WoW.

So as you can see I like mainly sword and sorcery RPGs but will play Sci-Fi as well.

Here is my problem. I and my brother are about MMOed out. What we would like is a RPG that we can play together over the internet since we live quite a ways apart. I tried doing some looking around but was over whelmed by the large number of games out there. Most gaming sites I looked at do not have the search categories I am looking for. What I really want is a PC game that’s an RPG that can be played over the internet. At this point I will take fantasy or Sci-Fi (if its not to silly). Something like a EQ that is playable over the internet but not an MMO.

I have heard about never winter nights and that you can play it over the internet. I am probably wrong here but my understanding is that if you don’t build your own modules then you wont get much play out of it. The problem with that is there are only two of us left. If I build a module then WE play it then what’s the point?

Tried Asheron's Call 1 or 2? Asherons Call was my first experience with MMO's and i thought that was cool.
I haven't played it in a long time, but it might be worth doing some looking into?

AC2 is gone, AC1 is good but they're both MMORPGs not normal RPGs.
NWN is awesome, get both of yourself the Platinum packs and play through the expansions.... not sure if the multiplayer HotU is out, but the other two work well enough multiplayer. The premium module Infinite Dungeons is supposed to be great as well, and that's got tons of replay to it. And then just start grabbing modules off of the Vault. Your biggest problem is finding quality ones that are also multiplayable, but they're on there.

Well if your wanting a break from the normal Everquest/Anarchy Online style MMO you might want to give Eve Online a shot (I know its an mmo but its very different).

As for non mmo's there is Titan's Quest, Dark Messiah Might and Magic (though the online play is more of a shooter feel I hear. The single player demo was great sort of a faster paced Oblivion), and Guild Wars might also fit the bill. Guild Wars is kind of a semi-mmo for a lack of a real word. Not counting the PvP stuff you can solo/duo your way through the game. Not to mention there is a lot of content. Guild Wars, Guild Wars: Factions, and comming this fall Guild Wars: Nightfall.

EVE Online is more of a solo game, it's not a game you work together as well as you do in World of Warcraft or other MMO's. If you like very confined games, Guild Wars may be for you. It has a strong element of team work.

I don't know from personal experience because I gave the game away before I played it, Dungeon Siege.

My step-brother went online with it and said it was fun. Fairly cheap as well. My guess is thats about the quality you'll get *shrug*. Looking a bit now, seems there is a Dungeon Siege II out, also.

That really isn't true though. PvP is very much a grouping/raiding game. Alliance warfare is all about large groups of players working together and even as a pirate/small pvp corp it is much better to fly in small groups than it is to fly solo.

Sure you can solo in eve doing missions, mining (though many many corps do this in a group for protection from player pirates in deep space), and PvE. I'm a soloist myself atm however I have been at times a member of an alliance that has done PvP ops (100 man fleets), small lightning raids (frigate/cruiser fleets), mining ops (mining barges, battleships, transport ships, all working together), etc..

With the addition of Player owned stations, Outposts, and Capital ships PvP is now even more of a team effort than just run around and gank people.

You CAN group up in EVE, yes, but what I'm trying to get is that it doesn't have the sort of "do everything together" element other games do. Sometimes you're dozens even hundreds of systems away from your friends. In WoW you can take a Gryphon, in Everquest you can teleport or whatever. In EVE you can't.

I've heard Titan Quest is a decent RPG in the style of Diablo.

Not sure about Multiplayer, but if Diablo was it's inspiration, then I'm sure it's there

True grouping isn't forced like in say Everquest 1 but travel isn't that bad. Between instant bookmarks, jump clones, and MWD frigates you can get around fast.
