Although I was already heavily into comics when I was introduced to Elfquest, this series by WaRP Graphics became my first true comics obsession. The original series consisted of 20 issues, which would sometimes be spread 3-4 agonizing months apart, and was simply amazing entertainment.
The basic storyline is that an alien race had to flee their dying planet and find somewhere else suitable to live. They set their sights on an alternate version of Earth in the Dark Ages or Middle Ages, and since they were originally shapeshifters, morphed their forms into what we would consider classical "high elves" if you will. Unfortunately, the servents of these aliens, a race which would later become the trolls of the series, staged a revolt and caused the ship to crashland at a much earlier time period... roughly Earth's Pleistocene.
I won't spoil anymore of the storyline, but I strongly encourage anyone who hasn't been exposed to Elfquest, head over to their website:

And check it out. Be sure you read the original series before exploring any of the other offshoots. The best way to read it imo would be to order the 4 graphic novels which comprise the original series.
