Show of hands who had been turned in to a devil worshiper or knows someone that has become one from playing D&D *looks about* no one huh.
Its sad to say but when your starving you really don't care where the food comes from, your just happy to get it, if the CCF don't want to take money freely given to them by D&D players over a point of contention then perhaps they should put on there TV adds, or there call answering donation lines that they only take money from people of the same faith or beliefs as them.
When I read the bible it said god loved everyone, even the people that play D&D, I guess I was wrong *tear*

Let's take a minute to think about this. Gamers are always getting up in arms (rightfully so) about people being prejudiced against them. Then they have a knee-jerk reaction to something that seems to have a logical reasoning behind it assuming it must be because the organization thinks they are evil/devil worshipers whatever. Is it now possible that this reaction is the type of thing that perpetuates negative feelings toward gamers? Does nobody else think it makes sense what CCF did? Now I by no means think it is the great organization it pretends to be nor have I ever believed that they do as much good as they would have you think. However, I cannot help but take their side on this one. If there is truly a legal reason that they cannot accept it then the impact of having taken the money would have been more damaging to starving children than denying it. Believe it or not name rights and such are important and touchy issues. Now, if CCF had taken the money then incurred high legal costs that were greater than the total donation as a result, the net effect would be less money for the children. Plus EVEN IF the real reason was they did not want to be associated with the negative stereotypes of gamers, it could still be a valid reason. They accept 17k from gamers and then 50k worth of donations does not come in because bigoted or not there are people who will no longer donate to them. This one time donation of a fairly small sum compared to their net fund raising for a year has now cost them more money, possibly from people who would give every few months, meaning a sustained income is now lost. You have to look at it from a business perspective, and when you take that standpoint it would have been stupid of them and far worse of them to accept the money. So while I agree with the spirit of the original comic I think people are taking it out of context at this point (which is exactly why we gamers get mad at others, because they fail to look at the context in which the "evil" things games are thought to do happen) and it was justifiable is not praiseworthy of CCF to actually turn down the money.

We are all humans, and some are starving children. We have 1 planet, well at some point we might find a new, but let us be good to the one we have now. I might be a 'hippie', but I say "Live and let live".

We won't get world peace tomorrow, nor will we feed all the starving kids tomorrow, but if we all try to convince our nabor today, he may convince his nabor tomorrow, and that way we might actually get a world in peace, where no one will strave or be hunted for color, religion or what game they like to play (Ludo is fun btw).

We are all humans. We all have feelings. We all die at some point. Why not make the best of the time we all get to share on this world?

Yes! I have followed both comics for over a year now, faithfully checking them both every day (I only recently stopped checking on the weekends, LOL).

It is very sad that some poor kids are going to starve more because someone has a cow about a game. it is very pathetic where this world is heading... anyway, back to my nagrand quests. (trying to hit 70 before the 13th)

Hello,

My name is marimacc, and I'm the lead moderator for the Gen Con forums. Not a staff member, just one of their more websavvy volunteers. As such, Staff asked me to pass the word along to websites that were discussing the CCF issue that a clarification was just posted on the Gen Con forums, indicating that CCF did NOT refuse any charity money from Gen Con. Link and text are below. Thanks for your time.

http://community.gencon.com/forums/t/18786.aspx

"I would like to take this opportunity to set the record straight on the Gen Con Indy 2008 Charity issue, as there has been a lot of misinformation spreading like wildfire on various forums, blogs, etc.

First allow me to explain how Gen Con goes about selecting its show charity. The process is very simple. We generally choose several potential charities based on the following criteria…
Is local to the (Indy) area
Supports children
Preferably has a focus in math, science or gaming related activities.
Staff then votes individually on which charity we would like to support at the show; majority wins.
In 2008, Gen Con decided on a different route in choosing the charity, due the death of Gary Gygax, Gen Con's founder. It was without question that the charity for 2008 would be one of Gary's favorite charities.

In choosing the charity for 2008, Gen Con had heard through several channels, including a close friend of Gary's family, that Christian Children's Fund (CCF) was one of Gary's favored charities. Gen Con contacted CCF about our intentions and asked for a logo and some promotional materials that we could use on our website. We were informed by a person at CCF that they would not be able to provide us with these materials, apparently due to our association with D&D. We were not comfortable with this position, considering Gary's role as co-founder of D&D, and founder of Gen Con, and therefore we decided to pick a different charity. We informed the Gygax family of our decision and the reason behind it, and asked if there was another charity they would like us to consider. Fisher House was suggested, as it too was a favored charity of Gary's. Considering the outstanding services this charity provides to service members, veterans, and their families, we knew Fisher House would be a great charity for Gen Con to support. We later found out that we had been misinformed as to CCF's position in regards to D&D and Gen Con, but by then we had already chosen Fisher House as our charity, and announcements and promotions were already made and in the works, such that it would not have been possible to change charities at that point.

To be clear, Gen Con made the decision not to donate to CCF; at no time did CCF refuse to take charity money from Gen Con. Gen Con chooses a show charity long before Gen Con Indy 2008 ever takes place.

I have sent an email to The Partnership that runs www.livegameauctions.com and asked them to make sure the information being presented and discussed on their website is updated and accurate regarding this issue. I would also like to ask each of you to do your part in setting the record straight by contacting the various websites, blogs, etc. that you are active on, and where this issue is being discussed, to make sure they have their facts correct as well. The statement on Wikinews purporting to be from a Gen Con staff member is completely incorrect, as Gen Con staff has never commented on this subject …until now.

If there are any further questions or points of clarification, please feel free to contact me personally at jeannette@gencon.com.

Thank you.
