Unsteady Business Model

Right now I'm scrambling to connect the GU dots. Not really knowing how to sell the site, or really even having the time to try, I've looked for other companies to pick up my ad inventory and run with it. I've even put out feelers for companies to purchase the site, whether they want me to continue producing the comic or not. I figure if someone wants to buy the site and pay me to continue working on GU, cool. If not, they can have the assets and I'll move on to another cartooning project. Probably with a storyline this time.

Now, don't take that the wrong way. It's not my preferred option. I'm not fond of the idea of giving up my business. I've been doing it for 7 years now and I'd like to see atleast 7 more. I'd like to think that with that much time invested, I'll be able to somehow turn it into an actual career. That's kind of hard to do when every improvement you make to the site actually serves to reduce page views while the readership stays pretty much the same.

Wow, tough choice, but you've got to make a living.

And if it doesn't work out, like you said, you can always do another cartooning project. Either way i'll be dropping in on whatever project you've got going for quite a while (as long as i have internet anyway). Good luck!

Well Woody, it would really be sad to see you sell GU. I have been reading your comics for years. If you do move onto something new please make sure to let us know were we can view your new work.

The hope is that I couldn't get rid of the readership, that they'd follow me on to the next project.

As it stands though we've talked to several companies about filling the space with their remnants, etc. The idea is that since "one company" has always failed to adequated fill the space "multiple companies" should be able to take care of it no problem. The folks we've approached know the arrangement, don't seem to have any problems with it, and we've made a calendar available to them so they know exactly how much inventory we have available for any given day. Hopefully this system will work to fill our space and pay our bills. Keeps your fingers crossed.

I'll admit though, a recent project has left me wanting to do a full-page, storyline comic.

I really hate to dig up old posts, but I've just recently started reading through some of this stuff and this one caught my eye.

The way I see it, if you want to do a full-page, story driven comic, then do it. Plug it in as the regular daily GU comic and run a trial to see if readership or page views drop off. I seriously doubt they will, and you may expand your fan base.

I would say "do both", but we all know you don't have time for that with the whole baby thing.
