The iPhone releases today (6/29) at 6pm and I'll be honest I'm tired of listening to all the hype. That isn't to say I wouldn't want one myself. Definitely not, I like gadgets as much as the next geek, and this thing make my finger tips itch.

Hell, I wouldn't even say that Apple is responsible for the hype machine surrounding the iPhone. All they've done in my opinion is put out advertisements showing what the thing can do. It's we geeks that cranked the engine and revved the hype engine.

For all my geek-interest in this device, there is something that immediately stopped me from actually pursuing one: the price. The iPhone is releasing in 4GB and 8GB models STARTING at $499... not including the calling plan (AT&T exclusive). For those of you that actually manage to get your hands on one, here's my sincere hope that you can get it for less if you sign up for extended plans.

The Price and AT&T (Singular)... Argh... I'd so get it if I could actually use it where I live. But apparently, thanks to AT&T, I live in a huge dead zone.

I'm going to try to get one this fall. You know...after the initial batch of mostly broken/glitched versions of the phone that Apple won't actually acknowledge as defective until they release Iphone 2.0 next year. Hmmm...maybe I'll just wait for the second version that will inevitably make this initial product obsolete.

:shrug: It's a neat gadget, but it's kind of hard to trust that they aren't intentionally trying to get you to buy a brand new version of the same toy every year, as they actually make about 100% profit on these things. (From what I've read they cost appx $300 to make, and they sell them at $600).

The iPhone is over priced, and I don't need that many features for something I'm mainly going to use as a telephone. I'll stick to my iPod and cell phone.

I know I'm tired of all the hype. I am anxiously awaiting to hear about all the brawls that happen when preople are trying to get them. I mean come on, you know it's going to happen.

After a couple of minutes of staring at that text, I'm still lost as to the exact wording Ted is saying.

I just wonder if going exclusively with AT&T was a bad move. For a company which is trying to bridge OS lines with it's software, why wouldn't they also try to bridge the lines of allowing their phone to be used on all/most networks?

If they are costing $300, then they aren't making much at all. Remember they have to ship them to at least two middlemen, then the retailer.. that profit gets shared between four sources.
