Earlier yesterday EA (Elecronic Arts) and Maxis announced a September 7th release date for Wil Wright's much anticipated phased evolution simulator Spore.

It was kind of hard for me to write that short, one sentence, news opener because I have no idea how exactly to classify Spore or toss it into a specific genre. Like the creations themselves, the game changes as the characters evolve. It has such open ended gameplay and extensive design scope that I refuse to try to slap a label on it from an existing game style.

Like many other gamers out there, I've been waiting on Spore for what seem like forever. And despite assurances that the game would be released "soon" the constant delays made me worry that we were looking at a Duke Nukem Forever situation. So when news dropped yesterday that the game had a set release date, I swore I heard angelic singing and was washed in soothing, heavenly light. Granted, I may very well have a tumor and the sheer excitement of the announced release date jostled it enough to temporarily press on my brain stem.

We probably won't know for sure until September.

A game about evolution? Hmm i guess there have been stranger things......

Everybody, where i work, sighed collectively when the news was announced.

I can't wait to get my hands on the finished product.

Will Wright sure knows how to appeal to everyone..

I am amazed EA has allowed the game to take this long without canning it.

I remember watching the video of Will Wright originally showing the game off and being completely blown away. I'll be there in September demanding my copy, regardless of whether or not EA/Maxis makes the release date. Let's hope for the sake of some poor game store sales person that they do....

I predict new addiction.

I predict a new release date. Sorry for the pessimistic response to this, but they just dont have the "street cred" to make me believe they will hit this mark.

When it does release in Oct 2010......I will certainly be on hand to get my copy. This game is going to be fantastic, even if half of the promises come true.
