On the surface it was a good idea. (10/3)
In the November 08 issue of Maximum PC magazine there's an article titled "I Can Use My Compuer FOR THAT?!". The article describes 35 "amazing" thing you can do with your PC. Nestled amongst the 35 is Eaton's Home Heartbeat System, a bit of technology that lets you remotely monitor different aspects of your house.
Sure the system doesn't quite leave you in the lurch by locking you in or out of various potions of your home, but it is designed to let you monitor stuff in your house such as locked/unlocked doors, water/power sensors, motion sensors, water shutoff controllers, a Home Key that lets you check on everything with a semi-small keychain remote, etc. There's nothing here that's gaming related but I thought it was cool, if a bit pricey, and wanted to share it with you guys. And the comic, well... I'm sorry it was late and not really spectacular, but apparently I locked myself in the bathroom. The truth is I was out of town all day yesterday, went to bed early (for me) [without doing a comic] and woke up really late. |

Locking yourself in with technology is a hell of a lot better than locking yourself in by sheer stupidity. One of my friends roommates locked himself in their bathroom and couldn't get out for half an hour. He eventually just bust the door down and called maintenance in the morning. Shows what drinking at 2 in the afternoon does for ya ;-)

ROFL that is awesome.
I want something like that I am always checking my front door to make sure it is locked/unlocked. Although I guess it doesn't really matter, I am not too far from the door in my apt to check a lot. |

I wonder if the computer running the house will need anti-virus protection...

If that would work when you are like ... at work, the "did I or did I not lock the door/turned the light off/left the water running" questions can turn you into a paranoid madman.
On the other hand, this opens up another great way of pranking... |

I locked myself in my bathroom once when I was in high school. The worst part is it happened 5 minutes after my dad left the house for work. I ended up being stuck in there for 4 hours while trying to unlock the door and was obviously really late for school.
I managed to take apart the doorknob with a tweezers, nail clipper and a needle. |

I never got a chance to read today's strip anyway. I locked myself in my car. Had to call AAA to come get me out.

While reading the article I keep thinking of SciFi's Eureka and the Smart house Sarah/Sara. I could dig living in a house like that. ![]() |
