News 4 with Sonny Ackerman (1/30)
Ever been reading about the release of a new game and you didn't get past the game's name before you started zipping off on an odd, associative tangent? I have.
I found a news item yesterday announcing the release of a new "tower defense" strategy game for the Playstation Network called Savage Moon. I'd barely sounded the name out in my mind before the wash of mental imagery started. None of them had anything to do with the actual game. And I'm okay with that. So here's the concept... You're tasked with defending mining site on Imoons (asteroids) from swarms of Starship Trooper style bugs, know as Insectocytes. You build up your base, they attack en masse. All you have to do is survive. As the game progresses you bring forth better technology and, naturally, the Insectocytes evolve to counter you. PS3 owners can download the game via the Playstation Network for a mere $9.99. If you want to get a feel for what Savage Moon is, there are many free-to-play tower defense games on the net. They just don't have graphics that are quite so nice. Personally, I've played Desktop Tower Defense 1.5 over at handdrawngames.com. It's very simple, but adicting none the less. If you're a PS3 owner and have picked up Savage Moon please let us know what you thought. |

Why does this game sound vaguely similar to a Blizzard release?

Tower defense was pioneered by Warcraft 3 as one of the play styles. Glad to see someone else is banking on it. It's addicting as hell.

ya, I have DTD1.5 on my hotbar at the top of firefox. Very simple graphically, yet incredibly addicting. I've played a few other TD games, but for some reason, still keep coming back to DTD over at Handdrawngames.

I get completely irrelevant mental imagery all the time. Makes things interesting, and keeps me entertained.

It sounds similar to "Garden Defense", too.

No. Command and Conquer is a standard RTS.
