Just me being unfairly mean again. (2/9)
After suffering staggering losses over the holiday season, closing studios, and laying off over 1000 employees, EA's Vice President of Communications, Jeff Brown, assured Kotaku Editor, Brian Crecente, that the company would continue to take risks in the coming year.
Source: Kotaku [ more info ] I don't have anything against EA or the direction they're going with their games. I've given up harping on regurgitated game play and concepts, because titles employing reiterative design and sequels still sell. One would assume that my harping was akin to preaching to the choir and therefore ineffective in the first place. But when I look over the larger gaming populace I keep getting visions of a choir trying to appear unified even though they're all wearing iPods and not really listening to each other. That being said, it does seem to me that EA was endeavoring to live up to their vow to focus more on original IP. And despite my obvious jab in the comic. Both of the titles mentioned are original IP. We'll have to wait to see how innovative the shooter really is. Comments made about the game don't instill much faith though. [more info] It just seems to me that if you want an interesting, entertaining, and actually innovative game these days, you're better off looking at the wealth of net based titles and downloadable micro games via your trusty console. |

Looks like game producers are taking the road of film producers. Remakes and copycats. Really annoying!

yeah, it's pretty sad that some companies seem to make it their mission to somehow make profits based on reselling the same game over and over again. We only need one football game, by gummit, and that's Play Action Football from the original NES!

Not that I complain, I still love playing Zelda, Mario Cart, Smash Bros, Final Fantasy VI super special extended mega edition ![]() EA just doesn't seem to remake/improve classic games, they take hits and turn them into an assembly line production. |

I think that EA will have to churn out some really innovative games in order to be considered relevant in current video game climate rather than churn out new versions of the software every year.
When I say innovative I don't mean one game out of 20 or 30 that EA owns. |

There will always be a market for EA sports games. People like to be playing sports games with current players in them most of the time, it is as simple as that. They put out a ton of games, and people are still buying them. I would guess that the recent troubles EA has had are along the lines of an ailing economy and reduced spending on video games in general. Either way I do not see EA going away any time soon.

It may sound rude, but they reap what they sow. I've been pretty disappointed in a lot of titles EA has made. They've made themselves look more like an entertainment monopoly than an actual gaming enterprise. I know it sounds childish, but they've bought out a lot of good developers and what followed were bad sequels to good franchises. If only they could get good developers that actually cared about the fan base and not the economics we might see improvement. But sadly, that is not what EA seems to favor. The prefer the business side over the fan appeal.

Their complatency really isn't so unexpected, since the video game industry is known for going much less downward than all the other ones... hopefully the complatency's shovelware brood will hurt consumer interest enough at some point have the industry to galvanize itself with more effort.

Be unfairly mean to EA as much as you want Woody. Personally I've never gotten over EA and OSI so as far as I'm concerned they haven't been relevant for years.
