It could be a strike against me. (3/8)
I was talking to someone about a coding project yesterday, and after mentioning how much work I do to keep GU alive, she asked something similar to "Well with all of that do you even have time to do a project like this". My response was simple, "I'll make the time". I went on to explain that unbeknownst to most of you, I typically prefer coding to working on the comic and monitoring the forums. I'd prefer to use artwork as a hobby not as a job.
But I think there's more to it than that. I think right now I'm just burnout. I won't bore you guys with silly details. It just kind of happens from time to time. If the folks at NetDevil Raptor Guts called me tomorrow though... The problem I have I guess is that I've been doing GU for so long, I don't know what it is I really want to do. Obviously I enjoy doing artwork or GU wouldn't have made it this long. But, I really get a kick out of the challenge of coding. Unfortunately, I don't have a strong enough resume in that field as evidenced by the job interview I mentioned recently. And then of course there's the thing this site actually qualifies me for community management. If I had to pick ONE to focus on for the next 10 years, I have no idea which I would actually pick. I can tell you this much though, I'd NEVER go into ad sales. **grins** |

I totally hear ya Woody. I have been working retail in woman's apparel for a very long time. I am good at it, I enjoy it, I love the people I work with, but I am ready to try something different. Maybe I could sell clothes to men! :-P

Being cross-discipline can be a huge boon for employers. The trick is in getting hired for what you know initially, proving you know enough of one thing to do that job well; spreading your wings and going cross discipline once you're in the door is usually the easy part.
eg. Design firms seem to love it when a graphic designer knows enough html to actually reconfigure the layout of a web page/email, or handle modifying write-backs to a database. |

Ahh, Red Mage Syndrome. I have it too. To know just enough about things to get in trouble, but not enough to be a master of just one.
(Un)Fortunately, that's the reason I was hired where I work now. I get to work on so many different projects, it (keeps me thinking/drives me nuts). |

I really enjoy you artwork, serious, and cartoony, have you ever thought of freelancing, submitting some work to the various game producers. Even if it isn't a "real job" you'd at least get paid for something you enjoy doing. Then, if you found a coding job, you wouldn't really have any ties to sever as a freelance artist.

Only fools wear a tie when they don't need to. So when you ask specifically what the current dress code policy is for an interview before you go and you're told specifically "by no means a coat or tie" then you don't wear a coat or tie.
And I've been in the comic plenty without a hat. |

I have an idea that may be able to help out. For all the work you have put in for the site for the comic, maybe you could sell/give away the underlying code for your site as a webcomic site template. Then you could offer to tweak it for a cost, kind of like an Ubuntu or Drupal model.
