So close... (5/30)
With a console that has seen constant delays, a founder that seems to be incapable of avoiding scandal, and an ex-CEO that is suing them for upaid wages and personal time off, it's no wonder the Board of Directors at Infinium Labs is proposing a name change for the company. July 13th the company will be holding a special stockholder meeting to propose the new name, Phantom Entertainment, Inc. As per the SEC filing outlining the meeting, Infinium's Board of Directors believes "the name change would be in the best interests of the Company" claiming "the new name better reflects the long-term growth strategy of the Company".
Source: GameSpot [ more info ] As I've said before "Phantom" is obviously the best name for Infinium's console. So, now it makes perfect sense that it be used as the name of their whole freakin' company. But, quite frankly, I'm tired of of them, the console, the Board of Directors, Timothy Roberts, etc., flying so close to the zapper without falling in. Maybe SOMEONE needs to be proactive and just toss them the hell in and save us all the annoyance. You may notice too that we have a new fly "hovering on the brink". So, why exactly is Atari there? Well, even with the recent game price cuts, they're in dire financial straights. And, Infogrames, their parent company, can't seem to manage the company competently (opinion). Hell they're selling the publishing rights to Neverwinter Nights 2 and Timeshift. Source: Joystiq [ more info ] Anyway, that's why Atari is there. |

Save the world? Check.

You mean they haven't closed their doors yet? I could have sworn they closed with the last round of scandals that went through with the now-ex-ceo.
I really don't pay attention, though. |

Not sure how they could even recover from their current situation. I'm not even sure how much damage control changing their name could do. And Atari just keeps going...hey those two should combine powers and make a nextgen Atari system...

Doctora, Atari isn't dead. That's why they're on the edge of the Zapper with Horizons. So mourning... YET.
--- And no, Infinium isn't dead yet. They put the Phantom console on hold while continuing to prepare for the release of the lapboard (which I admit is nifty). They are operating at over 60 million dollars in debt though. And the lapboard will NOT pull them out of that hole. So, their demise might not be far off. What really amused me though was that they brought in Kevin Bacchus, of Xbox fame, as CEO. And, shortly after he finished his own internal audit, he left the company. That, to me, translated as Bacchus having seen the mess Timothy Roberts had made of the company and, not wanting to go down with the ship, fled for his business-life. |

I doubt it's in danger; but, it's quite possible it'll be delayed.

I noticed that Target and Walmart are carrying an "emulator" of the old Atari 2600. Its got buttons instead of levers, and the games are hardcoded in memory, but perhaps its the beginning of a comeback. It does seem to have the original joysticks afterall...
